We minimize the sinister nature of this when we assign it to pervy men when it was a whole system of people operating with different motivations (greed, sadism, lust) operating with impunity based on a premise of power.

Racism, Puritanism, or tribalism. Whatever you want to call it. It is the inability to see others as part of the same group and therefore don’t believe they deserve any of those things and in fact deserve punishment for being different.

When we expect ourselves out of others we are disappointed. Far more people don’t value character than care to admit it out loud. I had to face this fact with friends who supported Trump.

I am well acquainted with the historical and systemic impacts of racism. It’s like any other thing in life. Something to be understood and accounted for. I negate its grip on the things that matter to me (wealth, health, and family safety) because I know it objectively and navigate to my advantage.

Impact is the key word. All that history happened but had no impact on my day to day life in those countries. It carries no salience for my children because its trauma did not visit them in their daily experiences.
