Different methods to prevent the spread of #ASFV exist:

🚧 Fences
🛑 Repellents
🌳 Natural barriers
🧩 Combinations

We evaluated the effectiveness of these methods.

Restricting wild boar movement is not easy but often necessary!

It is necessary for
•    protecting crop,
•    providing road safety,
•    minimizing wildlife-livestock interactions and
•    controlling #AfricanSwineFever

What kind of separation methods are there? 👉🧵

The Observatory works through a decentralized network of independent observation points that apply harmonised methods.

A “win-win” approach ensuring that data providers:
©️maintain ownership
🔗contribute to collaborative studies that strengthen European knowledge on #WildlifeManagement.

Can we collect wildlife data across Europe in a standardised way?
Yes, and Massimo Scandura is one of the experts involved in our project who is doing exactly that.

He coordinates data generation through the initiative “European Observatory of Wildlife”.

Collaboration between researchers & hunters is crucial for #wildlife management. A recent meeting with 13 French hunting federations highlighted this once again.

At the meeting, we had the pleasure to introduce our protocols for data collection & density estimation.

What are barriers to data harmonisation & how can we improve transnational wildlife monitoring?

We evaluated different collection systems of hunting bag data across Europe to understand more on above questions. Read up on our findings in our report 👇

We need to move towards coordinated, science-based #WildlifeManagement that unites actors & standardizes methods.

At ENETWILD we are determined to contribute to this shift.

While most wildlife management actions across Europe remain local & apply informal decision processes, many people are already active.

Now it is time to take the next steps: Moving towards coordinated, science-based wildlife management that unites actors, and standardizes methods.

#Wildlife doesn’t recognise borders, and neither should our efforts to understand & manage it.

To help protect wildlife & to reduce human conflicts involving wildlife, we need to understand - across borders - how species interact, and how they are affected by environmental and human factors.

🌿 Sustainable #WildlifeManagement is about more than controlling population numbers.
It’s about understanding & addressing impacts before they reach unacceptable levels.

Too often, decisions are made locally & reactively rather than resulting from a planned, long-term policy.
August 12, 2025 at 5:51 AM
Wildlife management in Europe involves many players. This creates a complex landscape where decisions must balance science, social, economic realities, & public acceptance.

Efforts to manage wildlife are not standardized, despite a real need for collaborative approaches.
August 7, 2025 at 6:14 AM
#WildlifeMonitoring doesn’t just shed light on ecological & epidemiological processes.

The collected and analysed data is essential to understand ecological relationships and forms the foundation for science-based decision making that supports wildlife, habitats, and society.

Wildlife management isn't just about protecting endangered species; it also involves managing common species and livestock in human-dominated areas.

These efforts support biodiversity and help reduce infectious diseases, benefiting wildlife, domestic animals, and humans. #OneHealth
July 29, 2025 at 6:13 AM
Wildlife management is not just about protecting endangered species or preserving natural reserves.

It’s also about managing common and agricultural species across farmlands, urban areas, and beyond. This helps to safeguard biodiversity and to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.

Protecting Europe’s wildlife means protecting our shared future 👥🐖🐗

Wildlife provides balance and stability to natural processes and that benefits us all, form nature to livestock to people.

That’s why wildlife management is important.

Nature doesn’t follow local rules, so why should wildlife policy? ENETWILD is building a shared, science-based approach to monitoring across Europe to reduce conflict, protect ecosystems & support public health.
