Since no one is expecting the interesting work, the challenge is getting them to see what you see. That part is the biggest challenge, making it the most interesting work of all. Learn to love it as part of the process and you'll be fine.

Other problems include things like coming up with an idea for a new product, only to find out that you also have to invent a number of components too. Or seeing an opportunity to create a new product line, only to find out you'll need to work with marketing to prove there is demand.

The most interesting work is the work no one expects. Most people didn't see Amazon when it first opened it's doors, nor Apple. Those companies got to where they are by fighting through the challenges.

An example would be optimism increasing engineering entrepreneurship. More manufacturing, more products developed, more exploration of ideas.

Seriously, how do we offset the pessimistic bias needed to do the work, with the optimism required to do something new?

I would really appreciate good insight into "how do we get engineers to keep the desirable function of protecting society from unsafe products through skepticism and calculation, while getting them to be more optimistic in other endeavors that may have upside to their lives and ours?"
April 15, 2025 at 9:57 PM
When you frame it this way, I don't think it's a coincidence that of the thousands of engineers I've met, the bias is always towards skepticism and pessimism, while in sales groups the bias is usually towards optimism.
April 15, 2025 at 9:57 PM
Contrast this with a group like sales whose job is to maximize upside. They maximize the value the customer understands they are getting from a solution, maximize the dollars brought in and imagine all the possible value a given product or service can create.
April 15, 2025 at 9:57 PM
One way to frame the work that engineers do in a company is that they minimize the downsides. That means minimizing costs, minimizing risks, and thinking ahead of all possible problems that can be imagined.

We all need motivation from time to time. The right stories at the right time can change the world.

I’m happy you made it where you want to be.

On the other end, the entrepreneur building the business applying the principles could lose financially if they don't succeed. It's at least a good thing to recognize where you want to be and actively pick the gamble you want to take.

The academic who thinks that he will come up with the next generalized theory and live on in glory alongside Newton and Einstein could very well spend their entire career and not make the major contribution they hoped for.
December 31, 2024 at 12:56 AM
Practical applications tend to be represented by businesses and generalized theories by academia with the applied being somewhere in the middle. Each one of these represents a gamble.
December 31, 2024 at 12:56 AM
When you look at generalized theory vs. applied theory vs. practical application, there are a tiny number of generalized theory revolutions out there at one end, and a huge number of practical applications at the other end.
December 31, 2024 at 12:56 AM
One such example is Newton's Laws of Motion were applied to fluids leading to the Navier-Stokes Equations which was applied to forecasting weather.

Another figure who then created another major generalized theory was Einstein and he set off another round of scientific revolution.

Out of the thousands of engineers I've met in my life, most were under confident in their abilities. However, compared to the general population, you have all the tools you need, mathematics, spreadsheets, physics understanding, and some knowledge of manufacturing or construction can take you far.

Engineers have solved problems for centuries through the understanding and application of engineering and manufacturing/construction principles. If you are an engineer, you aren't a bystander, but an active participant in the world.
