It’s sort of like complaining about your job and getting “Then just quit.” Or venting about your partner doing something inconsiderate and getting “Then just dump them.” It’s so dismissive and unhelpful. Let me get stuff out of my system. I’m not at a drive-thru trying to order McWisdom off a menu.

Oh, gosh! That’s very kind of you! 🥹💗🙏Honestly, any bookstore would do! For physical copies, I get the same amount no matter where it’s purchased from. Buying books to keep or give as gifts, taking books out of the library, sharing them online, et cetera - it all really helps.

I agree! I usually get it from other writers, which is just baffling to me. It’s what makes me wonder if they’re just saying it because they think it’s what writers and artists are supposed to say, or if they actually believe it themselves. 🤔

P.S. If anyone ever tells you that there's no such thing as bad publicity/any publicity is good publicity, knock them on their ass. None of this bullshit has translated into financial gain AT ALL. That's a myth. People will say "BUY BANNED BOOKS", but just saying it doesn't get anyone anywhere.

In case you can't tell, book bans and challenges have hit me HARD this year, both mentally and financially (which I'm sure is what people wanted). It's incredibly discouraging. Like, I'm currently trying to talk myself out of dropping this whole stupid author thing, and that ain't easy right now.

Oh, absolutely. I still hate it whenever anyone associates teaching with women and their "natural maternal instinct". Like it's wired into us. NO. And when you're childless, like myself, you're doing it because you want kids - you just don't/can't have them for whatever reason. Freaking NO.

Thank you! I don't know why so many people don't get that. Wanting to do what I like doing without worrying I'm going to end up hungry, living in a box, and wearing nothing but a barrel held up by suspenders like a financially devastated Looney Tunes character is kind of the dream. 😒

Maybe this is coming after a bad day/week/whatever. Maybe it's coming after years of teaching and frequently being told I should've been doing it because I loved it, so shitty pay, long hours, and disrespect on the regular are all totally good because FOR THE LOVE OF IT. Let me be mad about it.

You don't need to qualify the statement. If someone thinks less of you because you want to be paid your worth, fuck 'em. If you're saying it to be performative, thinking declaring that you do what you do for the sheer financially adrift love of it crowns you a more serious writer/person, fuck you.

Warning: I'm in a foul mood today.
Whenever I express that I want to be paid for my work, there's always that other writer who butts in to say, "I do this because I love it, (but being paid would be nice teehee)." Seriously, shut up. Writers often like writing. Duh. That's not what this is about.
