This was a really tough exercise! Some of my choices are obvious: A Gentleman in Moscow and Fingersmith regularly feature on lists of top books, but some are less so. Vernon God Little and Skippy Dies were both recommended to me by my brother Stephen who is an excellent judge - Paul Murray was recognised for The Bee Sting, but I prefer Skippy! Both will make you sob as you laugh hysterically, which is my top quality in a book. The early modernist in me easily recommends Wolf Hall: Mantel's research is that of a top scholar but she wears her learning so lightly. I discovered Circe (the retelling of the Odyssey story through her eyes) and Station Eleven through tutoring high school students (top marks for the Victorian Department of Education!). Question 7 and Lincoln in the Bardo both had me bawling openly in very public places, while David Sedaris' description of trying to learn French in France with the most terrifying teacher ever will have you screaming with laughter: the title of his book Me Talk Pretty One Day is an indication of how badly he did...
