Hi, the old version unfortunately wasn't functioning reliably, and has been replaced with the new one! It might be less intuitive to use, but is a much better and more reliable tool, and allows more advanced searching and sorting of material.

Our congratulations to Emeritus Professor Hywel Wyn Owen, recent recipient of the Green Robes at the Gorsedd, the society of Welsh-language poets, writers, musicians and others who have contributed to the Welsh language and to public life in Wales. @placenames.bsky.social

The spelling for the county is indeed quite late (1547-63), but the bishopric is referred to as "la fraunchise del Eveschee de Duresme" in 1303, so significantly earlier! The same spelling is used for the diocese in 1302.

Just a quick thanks to @englishplacenames.bsky.social for letting me publish an article with a silly title.
Article first page. Title: Where’s Walh-y? Searching for ‘invisible Britons’ in early medieval England’, by James Chetwood. Cover of the Journal of the English Place-Name Society, volume 55.

We've been sitting on this one for a bit, so very thrilled to see our Great Viking Survey out in the wild today. 🌊

Find it at vikingsurvey.org, and please do share far and wide - anyone is welcome to take part!

We're so pleased to launch The Great Viking Survey today, a global study on how people view and connect with the viking world as history and heritage. We invite anyone, anywhere, to share their thoughts on vikings and their legacy!

Let us see the Viking Age through your eyes at vikingsurvey.org

What does guest-blogger @em-ehx.bsky.social make of the 'carrot-shaped' #Orkney island place-name #Egilsay?! Find out in our latest blog! shorturl.at/UnbgU
St Magnus Church, Egilsay, with Rousay visible in the background © Tom Fairfax. Colour photo of a stone church on a lightly cloudy day. It has a distinctive round tower. The church sits in the middle ground with an unmettled lane leading to it. The background is sea with hills beyond.
