The English Truffle Company finds black truffles in English woodlands and offers a unique opportunity to experience truffle hunting.

Dorset, England www.englishtruffles.co.uk
Occasionally we get sent a photo of a British white truffle. THE white truffle, (Italian White) doesn't grow here. There are 8 species in this country and are very difficult to name without a microscope or DNA test. I think is the Spotted truffle. #theenglishtrufflecompany #truffles #trufflehunting

Recent garden truffle find reports are from Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Skiathos (a Greek island)! The photo shows the Greek find - a nice summer truffle. Much of the island is on limestone and related dolomites so suitable for them.

Last week I had a fascinating visit to Jurassic Coast Mushrooms. What really stood out, is that some of their cultivation uses tiny samples from rare wild native specimens. They are growing Lion’s Mane (pic 1) from UK finds. This helps with species survival & gene preservation. Pic 2 - a Scalycap.

When I got this report of a garden truffle find from the postcode ME (Maidstone in Kent), I assumed it was somewhere in the chalk hills of the North Downs. Wrong – it was to the south on heavy, Weald Clay – another truffle that hasn’t read the book about where they should be!

Pleased to see that good sized truffles are about despite the overall low rainfall amounts. We got sent these photos by a lady in east Dorset who found two unripe truffles under oak but surprisingly on sandy, acidic soils. One weighed 190 grams and the other 120. #theenglishtrufflecompany

Halleluiah! So, so relieved that we have some rain and there is more in the forecast. I'd like more to give the soil a good soaking. It's too early to tell if this dry period will impact the size and number of truffles, but we know that is the result of a dry summer.

PS Anyone seen my waterproofs?

Clever boy - he got a second overall in a scenting competition on Sunday. Searching for gun oil in a variety of "games", his consistency across them all gave him the overall placing. This has helped his truffle hunting, in both situations he indicates the location of the scent with his nose.

Waiting for full details but very much hoping to be able to restart exporting trees to customers across the EU including Ireland. A significant trade was stopped by Brexit.

We recently received an email from Wisconsin. It included a photo of a painting by an ancestor, Augustus Henry Fox. The email asked if I thought the gentleman was a truffle hunter. My findings are at www.englishtruffles.co.uk/news/truffle.... Any other thoughts would be much appreciated.

According to the radio, it is National Truffle Hunting Week. I don't know who decides these things, but it's not really truffle season yet. You might get a very early summer truffle but it will be unripe with little flavour or aroma.

"Are these truffles?" said the email from Lincolnshire. "They are growing in my garden". The photo is not of truffles being above ground and having stems, but another type of prized fungi - Morels. These are a spring mushroom and this species likes woodchip landscaping.

Truffles evolved from aboveground fruiting #fungi and DNA evidence suggests Phallales stinkhorns evolved from a #truffle ancestor, returning aboveground. Like truffles, stinkhorns rely on animals attracted to odour to disperse their spores.

The magic behind rich, earthy truffles lies in the relationship between a tree’s roots and the fungi tuber melanosporum, commonly known as the black truffle.

Photo - Dorset this week. The lack of rainfall since early March is a concern - the Met Office map compares actual to average. English #truffles grow slowly needing regular rainfall. A dry summer = fewer/smaller truffles; a dry spring is a concern too. Some light rain forecast more needed more.
