Incredible work led by @camimille.bsky.social during her PhD!

With the help of all co-authors, we show a new trick in Mtb’s playbook, reshaping its inner architecture to adapt to its niche 🔬
enningalab.bsky.social
Importantly, not all Mtb strains are equal, though. We found that some strains form MIMs much more efficiently under the same conditions ⚖️
enningalab.bsky.social
Why does this matter for infection? We found that when Mtb is packed with MIMs, it actually dampens inflammation inside host cells 🤫

MIMs show up when #Mtb senses nitrate! You can think of them as extensions of the bacterium's inner membrane into the cytosol, which let Mtb tune its metabolism to external signals. 🔄

Time for some insights into our latest #preprint

Using cryo–electron tomography, we peeked inside different #Mtuberculosis strains, and a couple of other mycobacteria.🧐 Surprise: some species, especially the host-adapted ones, build intracytoplasmic membranes (we call them MIMs)! 🦠

🦠 Mycobacteria aren't just tough, they're interior designers! 🦠 Check out our latest #preprint 🚨, led by our PhD student @camimille.bsky.social , where we show that #Mycobacterium tuberculosis builds secret cytoplasmic membranes to adapt its metabolism and sneak past immunity 🤫

Thread coming soon!

After the 2024 Paris Olympics/Paralympics, a similarly awesome event will take place in Paris at @institutpasteur.bsky.social in 2026- see here 👇

So cool to see our recent @plosbiology.org paper from Léa explained in French 🇫🇷🥖 cryo CLEM is more fun than google earth!

Zoom into a human cell infected by Shigella, the bacteria behind dysentery. Using cryo-EM, @leaswistak.bsky.social and team revealed how it pierces cells with molecular syringes. Stunning science at the nanoscale.

Our latest paper is out! Congratulations to @leaswistak.bsky.social et al for this amazing #cryoET work that elucidates the initial stages of #T3SS dependent vacuolar damage during #Shigella infection. We will do a deep-dive later! journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
