I worked with a citizens journalism company, purplestates, that did some of this. Many years ago now, but it's an important format.

These notes came through for me immediately. I don't think they require much investment to pick up on. The conversation between Data and Riker at the end is tremendous. What profound growth can be had from a little perspective.

The Measure of a Man convinced me to watch TNG. Of the many things that show can be, those moments of asking big questions with an open heart are my favorite. Moriarty of course in there as well.

For example: did the FBI kill MLK? Or did they just want him dead and intentionally sow as much discord as they could to make it happen? The throughline for any of it remains that I live in a fascist and deeply racist country with institutional power leveraged to those ends.

The implied question here is "I want to have a conversation but I don't know you or what we could talk about" and so often anything that satisfies that is appropriate enough. Almost interchangeable with "what do you do for work", "what are your hobbies", "what media have you enjoyed recently", etc.

These types of questions are asks for intimacy, and asking without offering is offputting. I usually then try to strike a slight step towards opening up a few conversion threads without being too vulnerable, but it's tricky. Even if that means not answering the question directly.

Yeah this is a great foundational value. Tricky though, since power arises on multiple scales so readily. And the line between consent and coercion is fragile, like the truth.

Something else I judge systems by is their ability to support / enable honesty (and integrity?).

A is my first expectation because of Minecraft / Breath of the Wild

But I think there's plenty of room to mix it up and that might be a nice distinction. Could also have gems pop out as you mine.

Very cool! Feels related to / a minimal version of differential growth. And using a cell grid makes some of the constraints much simpler.

Eight years ago I switched to binder clips for pretty much everything and my life has been better since.

Did you like it? I've been pondering it for years but never quite made the jump.

It didn't used to be that way. But they've seen the dollar signs from their closed iOS ecosystem and have been slowly inching macOS towards that with every release.
