Just a reminder of some of the context around the TikTok ban: In 2020, Trump tried to ban it via executive order a couple months after K-pop fans used it to organize fake signups to Trump’s Tulsa rally, which led him to publicly overestimate how large the crowd size would be.

The practical implementation of this ban by tiktok is completely over the top. It's overcompliance to an extreme degree while praising Trump. It's clear that this is political at this point. This isn't simply an IP ban, it's an account level ban tied to accounts with registered US phone numbers.
Just tried on desktop. I was able to access the site with a VPN but once I logged in, it gave me the ban notice. I think this is specific to US based accounts and cannot be circumvented with a VPN.

This is so goofy. Biden signed the law that banned TikTok last April. Trump is a hypocritical opportunist who decided to switch his position because he saw a political layup. To get more favorable terms TikTok is sucking up to the incoming president. Not everything is an Anne Applebaum column
