Had to tackle a couple of fan swaps on launch units now and it's made me curious if it's just a more widespread problem or something that could be traced back to specific batches of the fans via lot number.

It absolutely happens to many of us, and at least sometimes to comic effect. My partner's mother once got into a panic over her fears of getting "salamander" poisoning and it became a story for the ages.
