I "finished" my survivor practice game, just built it far enough so you can play. There's still a lot missing: more abilities, a textured background, bug fixes and of course art style consistent assets (or any proper assets). But it's something that got done at least 🥳 lajiao.itch.io/lone-survivor
So, talking about horse games at the Game Dev Days was a pretty cool experience. A personal highlight was making a student feel not alone with the topic - that alone was worth it!
Going home from game dev days Graz in the coziest socks from @neophobica.bsky.social ! Love them and only want to wear my 5 different cat socks from now on 🥰
Fun talks and games @ game dev days in Graz - thank you, @gamedevgraz.bsky.social , it's a blast. Also so cool to have people stay and listen to my short horse game talk <3
I was just ranting to my bf that we get taught abstract concepts without practical use in school, generating zero interest in math, at least for me. How sad I am now that I didn't listen and how enthusiastic would I have been if we had used it for something like building a game in school!
I mostly explain it from a warhorse/combat point of view and it does work surprisingly well that way - or people are good at faking interest and understanding xD
A few months ago I cursed and suffered when I had to do UI. Now, it's actually kinda relaxing to build it! Ofc, still just basic functionality, not yet pretty, but I like doing it :D
Built something very not-exciting today - level up UI! By now this practice project is giving me the feeling that I need to build a better code structure in order to be able to reference everything in a cleaner way. Well, I definitely know what my former coder-colleagues were preaching now😂
OMG how amazing is this?! 😍 I loooove chickens, grew up with the old Slovenian/Austrian chicken breed "Altsteirer" - would translate into "Old Styrian" and especially love how the females look <3 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altstei...
Things that I kinda expected to happen in some way but hoped wouldn't: Finally managed to add another ability from an ability pool via picking up a chest - but this breaks the boomerang ability. Probably because they all use the same single bullet code. Well, on to debugging 💗
I went on to create a boomerang ability, for which I encountered a whole bunch of challenges. For the first ability (and this too) I just use a bullet spawner node which I rotate into the shot direction. But now the bullet needs to return! Spent days to solve that - and finally did it!
Currently I'm working on my vampire survivors like practice project in Godot. The basic setup went smoothly enough, and I felt smart about the first ability I built. Of course it doesn't feel great yet, but the basic functionality is there 🥳 Then however, ...
And now? Soo my next practice project is a vampire survivors like - and I'm way too motivated. It made me go about and beyond what I learned and I kinda want to document and share how this journey is going.
Also, I still have like 4 modules left - and probably some more practice projects lol
At the same time my friends and I took part in a game jam and created this awesome and cute game: lajiao.itch.io/patching-pals
As I had just learned making simple particle effects + lots of UI in the course, I did not only do design work, but also the amazing VFX and UI in this game haha
Then I went on to make a text adventure, which I ended up not uploading (yet), because it meant a lot of writing and I kinda just wanted to go on with the course after having built the games main mechanics and structure in code. I might still get back to it and finish it at a later point.
So the first practice game I did (as suggested in the course) was a simple clicker game: lajiao.itch.io/gameseller I had learned a lot of UI stuff, and animations / tweens (and more) and went on to practice all that in this little project
So guess it's time for my first post on bsky! So in the last few months since our studio had to close its doors forever, I decided to learn Godot - because tutorials were not working for me, I started an online course with @gdquest.bsky.social - and I've been making incredible progress :o -> thread
