Kestrel had escorted me there, sliding open the pocket doors disguised as more wainscoting on the upper level of the house. She pointed out a tall white cabinet to one side where I could find towels and extra robes, and an ornately carved dark cherrywood privacy screen where I could undress and leave my gown to be laundered. She had barely finished speaking before I’d slipped behind the privacy screen and begun peeling off my torn, dirt-covered dress. It pooled around my feet, and I didn’t bother to see if she’d left the room before I stepped out from behind the screen and padded softly towards the tub.

I found myself on my back, looking up past overgrown grasses and brambles into Cahir’s leering face. His mess of black hair fell into his gray eyes as he angled his face down to look at me, and beneath the dark of the night sky, they looked as cold and black as the wrought iron keeping me out of the city. “Caught you,” he whispered, then lowered himself into a crouch beside me.

My pulse raced in my throat, my breath coming in quick bursts through my nose. I nodded. “Words, Princess.” “Yes,” I breathed softly. “Do you agree to it?” “Yes. I- I’ll try.” I swallowed around my pulse. “What if I can’t? What if- what if I can’t?” “Then I assert myself.” The heat in me spread, molten and overwhelming. I dropped my gaze. “How?” Soren made a low, thoughtful sound. “Words. Touch. Proximity.”
