put 100 of them in the same room that are petrified of taking power and make them draw straws

so much of the conversation (and let's be honest all conversations about politics) danced around - was even explicitly stated at points - the word / concept "we"

when I talk with friends about how EU isn't moving fast enough to get in on AI and how it's such a shame the tech sector is falling behind, I just respond "good"

no reason to be the bag-holders for these US companies that are lobotomizing themselves

The richest man on earth owns X.

The second richest man on earth is about to be a major owner of TikTok.

The third richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The fourth richest man owns The Washington Post.

See the problem here?

Ugh, I know you’re right but… just want to shake people sometimes

There was another post recently about aligning EU fiscalization policy to do this (which I completely agree). Do you think, given the fact there’s not much choice in how to become resilient as a block, that EU can overcome this internalized idea of member-state status?

Do you think the common perspective in EU - “we’re screwed, no government is able to do anything, we have too much debt” - can be overcome? Having a non-U.S. tech sector that serves eu citizen’s needs seems a no-brainer, but will debt-financed gov investment (like what US can do)

I’m often arguing that this is the only solution to the budget problems that are happening in every EU country… every solution comes with new sets of problems, as you are right to point out

In France there is the Identité numérique application that is issued by the government in order to access government public utilities (taxes, paying tickets, etc). There’s no reason a social media company couldn’t piggyback off access to that service to *only* access age verification for example

The way these people are frying their own brains by isolating themselves off into swarms of yes-people and AI, the argument could be made that society would be *saving them from themselves *

I wonder how much Coates' article holds sway with certain parts of Dem establishment, particularly Obama

Dunno, I really enjoy Colombo still!

If anything, Trump *should* be a gift to any left politician here in France (or Eur generally).

“We hear the issues of average French-person, but we can clearly see what the politics of anti-immigration and reckless austerity *looks like* in practice by looking at the current state of the U.S.”

100% ... they weren't willing to hear that voting against authoritarianism was going to solve their problems, especially when voting (in the avg voter mind) is doing democracy ... wrong message to a public that doesn't exist
ericano.bsky.social
Flattening the reasons for the outcome here, but the message fell flat because of failure to meet political moment
ericano.bsky.social
It was inherently contradictory!

“We must fight authoritarianism!”
“What authoritarianism?”
“Trump!”
“Okay! How?”
“Vote for us!”
“So, democracy already won? Why are my groceries so high?”

I think the environment of 5-layer ironic nihilism that the Fuentes crew creates makes most discussion of right or left moot... I'll bet if you had a conversation with the guy he might have a hard time describing his motivation

although, I do think this iteration is particularly degenerative... I've talked with other parents of small children (6/7yo) that let their kid "talk" with CGPT and ask it to "tell me a story about x"... I was in shock

you know, I was listening to another philosophy podcast about this and the writer reminded that even Socrates bemoaned the new development of writing ... how it pretended to have voice and thought but was sitting dead on the page. I think they were discussing Julian Jaynes' "...Bicameral Mind"
