Obviously, there are also all sorts of drawbacks to working within the two party system (somewhat muddies our independent profile, etc.), but we should be clear-eyed about the benefits

It was harder for Cuomo to generate voter support in the general because he wasn't the official Democratic candidate — and that also made it impossible for even the worst establishment Democratic leaders to openly endorse him against Zohran in the general

A century ago, one of the major techniques to defeat viable or elected Socialists was for the Dems and Reps to unite to run one joint anti-Socialist candidate. Doing that today is much more difficult when Socialists win the official Democratic nomination

The task ahead is to make use of the momentum of the mayoral victory, plus the levers of city hall and the reach of Zohran’s massive platform, to reverse engineer a working-class movement powerful enough to transform New York City
