Nothing remotely resembling an insurrection is happening anywhere in the country. Any violence associated with protest has been isolated, mild, and, in nearly every case, instigated by federal law enforcement. If we let Trump get away with calling dissent an insurrection, our republic is over.

President Trump is "seriously" considering invoking the Insurrection Act in order to more easily deploy National Guard troops to major cities as part of crime crackdown, NBC reported on Wednesday

Conservatives are ignoble autocratic liars for the most
part and the few who aren’t should be gettable in this environment.

I don’t disagree that Reagan free market absolutism has wrought havoc but the whitewashing of Ollie North is how we got Trump.

I have no confidence in Hamas data, but the anecdata is irrefutable.

I mean, Israeli views do matter too, but your point mostly stands. Israelis do need to sufficiently recognize the devastation that’s been brought to Gaza.

My argument to serious conservatives would be that the civil rights act and voting rights act were necessary because reconstruction failed. Want to limit the government’s control then repair our social contract.

I think it will be a useful, if inadequate framing of the moment.

Like, I think replacing him is a political question, not a legal one.
ericblyler.bsky.social
I think he has legal legitimacy. We do need a POTUS and legally there is no other option.
ericblyler.bsky.social
I think one could argue in the vein of “seriously but not literally” that Trump is technically legitimate but actually illegitimate.

still a very monarchist view.

The Spirit of Iran/Contra is alive and well in MAGA.

but even more clearly with National Review which pretends to be Trump skeptical but offers zero substantive resistance.

It really comes down to who still considers themselves a republican. The Bulwark crowd doesn’t. The Dispatch crowd mostly does, even though they deny it, you can still clearly see their partisan instincts.

Red Scare politics is alive and well in MAGA. What’s a “real” American. Reagan republicans did not see socialists, welfare queens, or gay men dying of AIDS as real Americans.
ericblyler.bsky.social
people forget for all Reagan’s victories, his ideology was forged in the fire of McCarthyism. The anti-Trump Reagan Republicans have more in common with Trump than they think.

How about Organic Textualist. You’re happy for change, just want it codified.

Robert is our lefty token textualist.

We need a second reconstruction the same way we needed a second continental congress.
