Much more research is needed to how effective this treatment is for this specific group of diabetics and whether it can be expanded to other groups of Type I diabetics

Treatment stopped hypoglycemic episodes w/in 90 days & all 10 patients were able stop insulin injections w/in 6 months.

Treatment doesn't stop the underlying autoimmune condition from destroying the insulin-producing islet cells so patients will have to remain on immunosuppressants for life.

Initial findings suggest that this treatment may only help those with specific form of Type I diabetes - hypoglycemic unawareness. For patients with this specific condition they have none of the usual symptoms of crashing level of blood sugar.

The treatment involves stem cells that have been programmed to turn into functioning islet cells - special pancreatic cells that produce insulin.

To do proper placebo testing would require testing a broad demographic including kids through seniors and could include people with comorbidities.

Then there is the ethical issue of doing placebo testing for treatments meant to prevent deadly disease. Jr's order means that half of the test subjects would be INTENTIONALLY exposed to deadly pathogens without any protection and could die, and many will. This isn't hyperbole.
