Straddling the bike isn’t riding though, and it is also not codified in the DOT statutes, so it is therefore legal. That makes this assault and detainment by the police a clear and obvious abuse of power.

I look forward to that cyclist getting their day in court.

Do you know this or are you guessing? Because it seemed to me like they were standing in a group of protesters with their bike. Often times protesters will use bikes to block cops (they learned this technique from bike cops), and they don’t like when people use their own techniques against them.

You absolute can have your bike on the sidewalk, you just can’t ride it on the sidewalk. After all, most bike racks are on the sidewalk as are some citibike stations, so it makes absolutely zero sense to say bikes can’t be on the sidewalk at all.
