New media is the only part of the industry I see myself succeeding in, at least partially in the next few years. Less censorship, less placating to the bourgeois, making stories on my own terms that I get to assign meaning to, and working with people I trust.

Don’t need an Oscar.

It’s more important to them to put people under a spell for 30mins-2hrs than to actually make people feel and think.

People used to work 9-5, watch a 50min episode live every weekday then go to bed. Now people have their 9-5, their 5-9, and basically just use TV to feel something predicable.

I have profs saying that producers want tv that people can watch passively (thus passively making $) while scrolling on their phone than complicated plots that people need to actively watch, listen and think about.

Producers in the “big 5” value the predictable emotional responses to their work and making tik tok clips than putting effort into making the process more sustainable for everyone. If they value the product more than the labour of the people making it, they’ve been doomed for decades.

I have screenwriting profs talking about “ethical” genAI usage in their classes, and my parents telling me to write for bots after I graduate. It’s why I’ve been pivoting to new media and actual plays, and planning to stay in Canada after I graduate despite being a dual citizen.

At the last big bad con, someone had poker chips with a QR code on them as a business card! Perfect quiet stim toy and awesome marketing 13/10

When I went to big bad in 2024 yes I was intimidated/nervous being around people in an industry I respect a lot, but the lack of pressure to perform on/for the internet made talking to folks in person oddly freeing and exciting to me!

You’ll do better than you think!!
