Yes, you're on the right track. My wild guess is built on Latin "parare" (to fight, to stop), similar to "par à sol" (par à soleil) that finally developed into Swedish parasol.

Swedish word of the day #swotd is paraply (umbrella), from French parapluie. There are plenty of French loanwords as French was a status marker for the Swedish elite especially during the 18th century, often in areas such as culture, fashion, and food.
