I would think locking in a 3 win first baseman for 7 more years would be more Wilpon than letting him walk before he becomes a shadow of himself. Alonzo is not Freddie Freeman. I appreciate what he’s done here, but if he insists on unrealistic years and dollars, you have to be prepared to walk away.

Have McNeil and Alonzo been very good homegrown Mets throughout their careers? Yes. Is it their fault the Mets have not made it over the hump? No. But it’s time to pivot, and neither players are generational talents.

You could feel how confused both Gary and Ron were last night seeing Mullins in there after they agreed on Thursday evening that Taylor needed to be the CF going forward. I know it probably wouldn’t have made a difference last night, but it’s an egregious error, lefty/right matchup be damned.

If the Mets do miss the playoffs, the silver lining is that Mendoza has to be fired, even if the optics aren’t good. If they squeak into the postseason, we get to watch this clown show for another year.

Vientos is 271-327-569 and Baty is 301-368-485 in the second half. I don't see those guys as the problem, especially as part of a (cheap) supporting cast.

1B is obviously the big offseason issue, but adding Benge as the CF, the 3 pitchers for a full year, & Jett is a plan. The bullpen is something else, but maybe you move one of Vientos/Baty/McNeil and replace him w/ Jett. If you want to get weird, maybe buy Nimmo a 1B glove and go after Bregman.
