The Garden Communicators International People's Choice Horti Award logo shows a simple green hand holding a green plant in a palmful of soil. The cover image of the picture book Wait Like a Seed, written by Erin Alladin and illustrated by Tara Anderson, shows a blonde, little girl in a blue dress blowing milkweed seeds against a yellow autumn sky.

How do you find a publisher you can trust? How about a freelance editor, book designer, or book publicist? We hear enough horror stories that it can be daunting, so I've pulled together a post to help you navigate: erin-alladin.com/2025/08/25/h... #authorsky #publishing
How to Find Publishing Companies and Freelancers You Can Trust
Scammers who target authors thrive on the lack of public awareness about how publishing really works, so let’s push back with some information sharing. A little knowledge goes a long way toward hel…

Reading my way through breakfast with my copy of The Garden Against Time propped up against a giant zucchini.

I love August.

The problem with trying to get Japanese beetles out of my grape vine: now I have to get Japanese beetles out of my hair.

#gardensky 🌱
In a shot from below, three Japanese beetles silhouettes are visible against a chewed-up grape leaf.

My little soda pop!🎵 Ever wondered about the origins of soda flavours like root beer and cola? The root in root beer is North America's Sassafras albidum. Cola comes from the nut of West Africa's cola tree. But which is the most interesting? Listen and decide! www.plantsalwayswin.com/podcast/epis...
Plants Always Win podcast episode thumbnail: Episode 30: Sassafras vs. Cola Nut. The image shows a mug of root beer separated by a vine-like line from a glass of cola. #gardensky

I'm not going to try rotating potatoes anymore. I've just ended up with potatoes growing in every part of my garden from tubers that got away from me 🙃 #gardensky 🌱

I shouldn't be jealous (you must be tired!), but I am. I love those insistent bursts of inspiration!

One of the services I enjoy offering the most is manuscript evaluations. If an author isn't ready for a full substantive edit, or if it's beyond their means, an evaluation is a great place to start. They come away with a report full of actionable big-picture advice and a follow-up call. #editing

I just want to create eternally. Sew this quilt. Plot my novel. Write a blog post. Play with pastels. Plant more flowers.

What is this "11 pm" nonsense? Who told my synapses they could get sleepy?

I'd like to lodge a complaint. Possibly in rhyme.

Working on a press release mailing list. It really is depressing how almost every newspaper in this country has been bought by one of two media groups.

My native plant garden is coming into its best bloom season. Now will someone please send me bees to enjoy it? This is getting frightening. I live out in the wild!
A tall evening primrose spire is coming into bloom with three four-petalled yellow flowers. Wild bergamot is blooming in clusters of tube-shaped lavender flowers. A yarrow flower head is composed of many tiny, flat white flowers in an umbrella shape.

I used to write and post daily poems. Some were serious and lyrical. Others were pure nonsense. That past self really took over with this spontaneous thought:

Sandwich lords and sandwich ladies.
Sandwich children, sandwich babies.
Who will be the sandwich king?
He who wears the sandwich ring.

If you're at @slj.com's Picture Book Palooza, I'm hanging out in Pajama Press' booth for the next hour to answer questions about Wait Like a Seed, Outside, You Notice, and the upcoming If You Go Walking. #PictureBookPalooza
On the cover image of the picture book If You Go Walking by Erin Alladin and Miki Sato, a little boy and his dog walk across a frosty hill, heading from the city into a wooded area. On the cover image of the picture book Outside, You Notice by Erin Alladin and Andrea Blinick, a little girl with black braids and overalls climbs a tree full of birds, butterflies, and insects. On the cover of the picture book Wait Like a Seed by Erin Alladin and Tara Anderson, a little white-skinned girl with blond pigtails blows milkweed seeds against a yellow autumn sky.

Another question is behaviour like smoking, drinking & violence. They show up in YA and New Adult alike, so why do editors sometimes say they're not appropriate for teens? It depends on the character's—and the NARRATIVE's—relationship to these actions. And how much cynicism authors treat them with.
erinalladin.bsky.social
The "basic" differences between books for YA and New Adult can fail you if you don't have these right: what does the protagonist care about, and what is their journey or arc throughout the book? Are they finding themselves, or setting up their independent lives? erin-alladin.com/2025/07/07/w...
Writing for Young Adult vs. New Adult
Young Adult and New Adult are similarly fast-paced and accessible, with a distinct narrative voice characterized by the personality of a book’s protagonist. But the two categories have important di…

Struggling to distinguish between YA and New Adult? There are the obvious things, like the age of the protagonist and whether they're in high school or college/entering the workforce. Except it's not always obvious, and authors get told they've written for the wrong audience all the time. #authorsky

If I can earn a living on editorial work and my own books while also freely giving people what information I can about how publishing operates, then I will live a happy life. So far, I am pleased to report much happiness and also much good feedback from subscribers.

Oh, and this has to be specified these days: the newsletter is free! You can tip if you like, but I'm here to remove whatever paywalls I can between authors and knowledge about writing and publishing. The opacity of the industry was a constant frustration when I worked in house.

I can't sleep, so here's a late-night pitch for the twice-monthly newsletter I write for authors. It covers industry insight, self-editing, craft, & marketing tips from a current editor and former book publicist who's worked freelance and in house. #authorsky #editor
