Went for the big chop ahead of major surgery in three weeks. I think I needed to get used to the idea of part of my head being shaved ahead of time so I can focus on recovering instead of mourning all that hair.

Here's the good old OED weighing in:

Then again, I saw a really bizarre Marx Bros book at the ARC the other day (kind of like this but shabbier and with weirdo embossing i.ebayimg.com/images/g/dw0...) and so maybe the arc arcs less?

🥖🌹Happy May Day!🌹🥖

This is your annual reminder that historically, young women—mostly poor immigrants with little social sway—were some of the U.S. labor movement's boldest and most effective footsoldiers.

Their energy and courage helped build the modern world. Solidarity forever!

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I'd keep laughing, but it's interrupting my emails trying to get clients to pay me so I can stay afloat for another month.

It always feels weird to talk about my work, but I want to put this out there:

I'm writing a book about this heroic group of Japanese Americans, who taught Japanese to members of the U.S. Navy in Boulder, CO during the height of anti-Asian discrimination in the U.S. in WWII.

Knitting really is a major solace, especially during these dark days of endless hospital waits and worries.

This has always been one of the most confusing dynamics for me. I've been shot down by many surprising interlocutors after objecting to violence/sexual objectification in some male authors' work, as if I were somehow a vanilla prude for not enjoying their preoccupation with female suffering.

Channeling my many Big Feelings into action this week. Among other errands today, I finally shipped off this year's first charity haul, eight hand-knit beanies and a hand-knit earwarmer for Knit the Rainbow, which gives warm handmades to unhoused LBGTQ+ youth in NYC, Chicago, and Detroit.

The images and descriptions in this historic collection are giving me LIFE right now.

I insist upon bringing this energy into 2025: historicpittsburgh.org/collection/c...

Hi to all you new folks!

I'm a journalist in Boulder, CO. History is my first love, and I'm lucky to be able to help translate the past for present-day audiences as a reporter and author.

When I'm not writing about yesteryear or obsessively knitting, I report on cool science/health stories.

This IMPORTANT NEWS ITEM, which I found while looking for info about Clarence's death, is exactly what I'm talking about. Talk about slice of life.

This is how I learned that my great-grandfather Bert, later a mortician, spent part of World War I helping recover war dead.

From what I know, he never spoke of his war days except to chasten his son when the son got navy tattoos. (He himself was extensively tattooed during his navy service.)

It's Veterans Day in the U.S., and if you have a relative who served, you may wonder what they did during various wars.

You may be in luck: In the late 19th and early 20th century, local newspapers often included vivid accounts of local men's war experiences!

A mini thread...
