NO ONE TEACHES US TO BE DAUGHTERS

Stumbling against our instincts, we learn how to be daughters. The first time I saw my mother cry, she was driving and some animal's belly split toward God like an offering. Blood altar of road and rot. At seven, I had fewer words than I do now and smaller hands to hold them. The first time she saw her mother cry, my great-grandmother's body swapped cancer for Spirit. Now, I get it. A daughter observes until her eyes are blood-thick with history. What prepares you to console your mirror? To press your flesh to her warm glass—reflecting you to you while weeping? BLOOD-FLEX leaning against a vase of purple and white flowers

#AWP panel organizers: keep me in mind for any talks on debut poetry books, debut novels, magical realism, the lyric, research-driven work, and environmental justice in creative work. I'll be in Baltimore next year celebrating my new books.

If someone said “Saeed, it’s important to be respectful” and I interpreted that message as an indictment… well, you’d be right to be concerned about me and for me.

It's a brutal time for young men, and to be raising one. The primary message they now is get is "YOU'RE BAD" without any meaningful attempt to offer healthy pathways beyond "Don't be a boy."

Absolutely perfect time for right wing monsters to sweep in with shitty answers.
