A wildly unedited first draft. She shot it in the flank, several inches above its hip. She never heard the noise the animal made---her ears were ringing from the sound of her rifle---but it went down all the same. Birds in nearby trees squawked and scattered. It was a bad shot. She knew that before her finger had released from the trigger. Before she dared look. Maybe she knew it before she fired. She took the shot anyway. It can take over ten hours for a hart to bleed out from a gutshot, her mother had said. The stag’s fur was wetted with blood. It was so much brighter than she had expected it to be. Not at all the deep crimson or watery pink she’d seen in movies. This is why you don’t hesitate, Juniper. This is why you don’t show mercy.
