Why I’m Pausing Styling Content to Explore Fashion Design
You may have noticed I’ve been a little quiet here the past few weeks—and it’s because I’ve made a really exciting decision. I’m shifting my focus away from creating styling content and moving more fully into garment design. Many of you know I’ve been dabbling in clothing design for years, and in the fall of 2023 I even debuted a 7-piece collection. Fashion design has always been a dream of mine, but until now, I didn’t feel quite ready to pursue it wholeheartedly. Something about this moment just feels right, and I’m ready to give it my all.

Your wardrobe should work for you—not against you.

Whether you’re neurodivergent, queer, gender-nonconforming, alternative, or simply ready for a wardrobe that actually fits your real life, style coaching can transform the way you get dressed.
Inclusive Style Coaching: How I Help All Bodies, Identities, and Lifestyles Build Wardrobes That Truly Work
One of my favorite parts of being a style coach is witnessing that moment when a client’s entire energy shifts—when they realize their wardrobe can truly support their life, not just take up space in their closet. Today, I want to share what you can expect during a 90-minute style coaching session with me—and how I approach styling for people of all identities, body types, and ways of moving through the world. Step 1: Understanding You Every session begins with one central goal: to understand you as a whole person…

What If Your Closet Isn’t Inconsistent—Just Multifaceted?
We hear a lot these days about finding your personal style. The idea is that once you’ve figured it out, your wardrobe will click into place. Your closet becomes cohesive, curated, a clear reflection of you. But what happens when your closet feels all over the place? When it looks like it belongs to several different people? Is that a style crisis—or a reflection of something deeper? I want to talk about something that rarely gets mentioned in conversations about personal style: impression management—and how it overlaps with identity, safety, and self-expression.

Creating Stylish Outfits Through Tension
Hey there—I’m Erin Simmons, style coach, sustainable designer, and lover of outfits that make you feel like yourself… but turned up a notch. Today, I want to talk about a styling concept I use all the time—with my clients, in my own closet, and honestly, anytime I want to make an outfit feel more expressive. It’s called creating tension—and it’s one of the fastest ways to make your clothes more personal and more dynamic. Now, I didn’t invent this idea. Stylists and designers have been using tension to create iconic looks forever.

The Psychology of Novelty: Why We Keep Buying Clothes We Don’t Really Love
As humans, we’re wired to crave novelty. That little rush you feel when you discover something new? That’s dopamine doing its job. Researchers believe this trait helped early humans adapt to their environment—those who sought out new experiences learned more, evolved faster, and were more likely to survive. But in our modern, tech-saturated world, novelty is everywhere. We can get that same dopamine hit by scrolling TikTok, opening a new browser tab, or—yes—buying something new online. And that’s where it starts to mess with our closets. Why You Keep Buying Clothes You Don’t Wear…

Dressing for Sensory Issues: How Your Clothes Feel Matters More Than You Think

Dressing for Sensory Issues: How Your Clothes Feel Matters More Than You Think
I’ve always been sensitive. And I don’t just mean emotionally — I mean sensitive in all the ways. But growing up on a sheep ranch in the backwoods of Idaho, surrounded by tough, masculine men, sensitivity wasn’t exactly something to celebrate. More often than not, the word sensitive was thrown at me like an insult. I learned pretty early that being sensitive was the worst thing I could be. So I did what many of us do — I tried to bury it. Over time, I got really good at tuning things out.

Redefining Professionalism on My Own Terms
How Owning My Story (and My Style) Changed Everything A couple of weeks ago, I gave a presentation to a group of 9th–12th grade students in the Upward Bound program. I was invited to do it by Dress for Success, an organization I’ve been volunteering with since January 2024. I was happy to say yes—I truly enjoy sharing what I know with others. Plus, I’m no stranger to speaking with teens; in the past, I regularly gave presentations to high school students on the topic of dating violence. I spent a full day preparing for the presentation.

Dressing a Changing Body with Compassion, Style, and Intention
Bodies change. That’s a fact of life—but it’s not something we always want to talk about, especially when it comes to how those changes affect our relationship with clothing and personal style. I turned 42 in May, and I’ve noticed something new this year: the soft padding that usually melts away in the spring is hanging around a little longer. On top of that, I’ve been lifting weights consistently—3 to 4 times a week—to protect my muscle mass as I age. It’s working (hello muscles in new places!), but the combo of muscle gain and a little extra softness means… my clothes fit differently.

My Summer Capsule Wardrobe: The Backbone of Personal Style

My Summer Capsule Wardrobe: The Backbone of Personal Style
When the chaotic creative in me hears the phrase capsule wardrobe, my mind instantly conjures up a lifeless outfit: beige trousers, a stiff white button-up tucked in just-so, tasteful gold hoops, and maybe—if we’re getting wild—Samba sneakers. Chic? Maybe. But personally? It feels like being handed a prison uniform (with slightly less personality). But here's the truth: even for a stylist who thrives in the land of drama, ruffles, and unapologetic self-expression, a capsule wardrobe is not optional—it's essential. Even if it’s just your backup plan. If you'd rather consume this content in video form you can find the YouTube video…

My Spring Highlights from Backstage and Beyond Most people don’t realize Austin actually has a pretty vibrant fashion scene. Sure, it’s not New York or Paris—but there’s something special happening here, and I do my best to stay involved in as much of it as I can. This spring, I wanted to bring you along for a peek behind the scenes. Catch the video here. Austin Fashion Week From Front-of-House to Backstage Magic I’ve been participating in Austin Fashion Week in various ways since the fall of 2022. That first year, I volunteered front-of-house, helping with runway seating setup, checking tickets, and post-show cleanup.
