Just started All of Us Murderers (by the excellent @kjcharleswriter.com) and it's set in a Gothic pile - built to look older than it is, with an octagonal central tower.
Is that echoing, and thus foreshadowing? 🤔
(I don't want to spoil anyone via architectural history trivia, so no placenames.)

Seeking a hair product I used in 2022ish, the internet offers me horse grooming goop. Briefly offended, I soon think: horses are huge! I bet you get more horse shampoo, per pound, than human.

A similar feeling. Bothered by death.

And what a painting! So overborne, so exhausted - if it had been painted in her lifetime, frankly treasonous. I'd love to say the painting inspired the story, but I only just found it. Queen Elizabeth I in Old Age, c1610, English School.

This is excellent, and you may know this - there's an excellent essay, something like 'how Dracula became historical', about the shift from the book (where the goodies use new tech and medicine) to film and other adaptations (which leaned into it being a "Victorian" piece). Does that ring bells?

The Strings are False? "Outside the station there was a flowering bush of buddleia and my father produced a little bag of preserved ginger. The ginger was sweet too though it bit, brought tears to the eyes, but the buddleia was sweet only, sweet." (p38-39)
