i think retro revivals can only really work when trying to continue a serialized game series that fell by the way. when iga made another pretty good metroidvania, we were all pretty happy about it since people who like those are always fine with another castle to run around in

Mega Man Zero 2 (legacy collection. no assist features) goes crazy just like it did when i was 9. toru nakayama's designs are awesome once again. story is cool. setpieces are cool. ending sequence is great. only think holding it back is the weapon leveling system

first up would be the megaman starforce DX romhack. a pretty good hack for sating curiosity but also a cautionary tale about how sometimes things get cut from videogames for a reason. certain features re implemented into the hack make the game a bit too easy and the endgame a bit bloated.

i liked sonia more as a kid because she got to do fights but yuru yuri infected me with the disease that makes me like good natured class president tsundere types which caused me to switch sides as an adult

notably the collection is important because the port of deathsmiles 1 on steam by itself is worse than the version included in the 1 + 2 port

the deathsmiles 1 and 2 collection is good for a bunch of different skill levels. they're both games where the skill floor 1cc is easy with a few sessions of practice and the skill ceiling 1cc is quite Real. deathsmiles 1 also has the Cave combination of manabu namiki on music and Junya Inoue on art

i do not like power in this game lol. im glad someone else's handling gets sacrificed instead of speed cars though since it lets those feel a lot nicer
