If you are offered pieces of gold Bronze Age jewellery by a bloke down the pub, police in St Fagan’s would appreciate a call following a burglary at the National Museum Of History.

Während der Recherche fragte ich einen Juristen, der in einer Diktatur lebt, was er beim Blick auf die USA heute denke. "Ich fühle mich wie ein Zeitreisender, der aus der Zukunft kommt und weiss, was als nächstes passieren wird".

This letter was one of my starting points for an article about what "the Romans in Switzerland" really meant. I didn't expect to get as close as that to an individual through an object from a Roman site in Switzerland. I was wrong. www.nzz.ch/wissenschaft...

I recommend someone at @theguardian.com quickly has a look at a map of Germany. (And why is there no flour in the sponge?!)

Love this. Oh what fun I am going to have making up sentences involving the words #Knossos and "clue" (or lack thereof). #Archaeology
rkduncan.bsky.social
The modern English word clue only exists and has its modern meaning because of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur: it derives from the much older clew, a ball of thread or yarn, which Ariadne gave Theseus to navigate the Labyrinth. There is no other source for clue in its modern sense.

Ok folks: what is your favorite fact that you share with people (maybe a bit too) eagerly?

I was - as always - hoping to find a female specialist to ask for their opinion and to quote in my article, but as so often searched in vain. Looks like I didn't check carefully enough? Next time I'll get in touch with you with any Neanderthal questions I might have. www.nzz.ch/wissenschaft...

It's rare that you get to include a link to a recipe from a Canadian First Nation in an #archaeology article, in this case for bone grease - which apparently is something that already the #Neanderthals liked to eat because humans can't survive on lean meat alone. www.nzz.ch/wissenschaft...

It's Tuesday. You're dragging yourself through the world, one cup of coffee at a time. Can nothing liven up this day?

How 'bout a thread of eel ships on maps? These maps are what got me into eels in the first place!

"Cool!" you say. "But wait...what's an eel ship?"

Well...
1/14
Two eel ships on the Thames, between Paulus Warfe and Qeen Hythe, from Hollar's 1647 "Long View of London." You know they're the eel ships because they're labeled "the Eel Ships."

This is a rather long thread, and so the alt-text will be greatly diminished today. It takes a while to write narrative alt-text, and I don't have it in me to do a 14-post thread. I'd have to plan ahead for that, and I certainly am not that guy.

I am aware that even the criticized 2020 paper had lots more in it than just the incestuous dynasty of god-kings, but of course, as often in journalism, I had to focus on the juiciest bits. @suegreaney.bsky.social @pennybickle.bsky.social #Archaeology www.nzz.ch/wissenschaft...
