Those already have gender I mean if you don’t have article bashing you the gender in the face whenever you say the name, what gender do you use? The one from its generic name sometime can be an escape hatch.

Honestly I didn’t know we had so many either, usually they only show major rivers on maps this is an everything goes map.
Except for the Rockies and west coast most of the us look very well vascularized with rivers everywhere.

I wish. Sadly the reality is more banal: the indeterminate are for river starting with a vowel so the definite article which is what give it gender is contracted to the gender neutral L’ instead of Le and La. Map maker couldn’t find out the river gender. And frankly I don’t have a answer either.

I’ll be honest as a native the gender I used for every day word is stuff I grew up with so it’s fully vibe based gendering.

Usually female name for object end with an e. But not always. But river name are « proper nouns » so all the rules are out the window.

The map is fully based on the article used. The other way is what pronoun was used and since most of the time the rule is based on gut feeling I wasn’t sure.
