maybe I've got too much faith in internet discourse but I feel like you're both right? like, we have to stop conflating "actual enviros concerned about unprecedented growth in energy demand due to AI" (good, true) with "people on the internet who yell at you for chatgpt queries" (bad, annoying)

but there is a lot of historical precedent of technological transitions to look at + already a model of how to use AI within limits and protect workers' livelihoods (SAG-AFTRA strikes) + a clear opty to organize a labor movement in sectors that are less-unionized atm? anyway idk anything about this

feels like the left is like "well what if we just refuse to allow AI to take our jobs" and is thereby ceding the ground of discussing it at all, and the EAs are like "well AI will replace us all in 3 years anyway so who cares" which is ceding the ground to influence real precedents in the short term

Maybe my most cancellable take is that discussions of AI data centers’ water use (up to 6.6 billion m3 by 2027 cee.illinois.edu/news/AIs-Cha...) should also acknowledge water use of livestock production (4,387 billion m3 around 2000 & likely growing agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....) 🙈
