If the Russians, God forbid make it to the Swiss border, any defense is futile. Narrow valleys are useless if the enemy can bomb them at will from the air.

Granted that Russia would need to engage NATO prior to reaching Switzerland. Which engagement would be even more problematic if Swiss assets would be part of defending, say Austria or Poland. Not fighting over her own territory.

The only conceivable threat is Russia. Switzerland should join NATO. Neutrality is too much of a luxury far small polities these days.

It varies from case to case.. Matter of probabilities. Setting up and creating a credible land army is often exorbitantly expensive. I can see the Swiss vacillating. Acquiring nuclear deterrence may be cheaper but would upset the great powers.
