Huge thanks to Geoffrey Ginsburg for the idea for the symposium and to fellow Glaswegian Stephen Kingsmore for co-chairing. At the following session, we enjoyed a lively discussion on the future of AI in healthcare.

Atul and his legacy will not soon be forgotten. ❤️

I had the honor of remembering and celebrating our friend Atul Butte today at a special symposium at the AGBT Precision Health meeting in San Diego. I shared the stage with superstars Chris Longhurst, Marina Sirota, Lucila Ohno-Machado, and Bimal Chaudhari.

In this new opinion piece, we explore our belief that AI can make a significant impact on health by helping humans increase their physical activity. A new version of the My Heart Counts app will soon help us test that idea.

I will treasure the times I got to spend in the vicinity of his protons, neutrons & electrons.

The world is darker today for the loss of his light.

RIP

I loved his travel tips and his detailed knowledge of United lounges.
I loved how all his tweets started with “Wow!”
I loved how much he loved mentoring students and trainees.
I loved how proud he was of his wife and daughter.
I loved being able to call him a friend.

I loved his love of data, of gadgets and of new computers.
I loved how he would sit in the back of meetings and code.
I loved his stories.
His talks were legendary.
I loved how he was once paid enough to buy "a small car" for one of his talks.

Atul Butte died yesterday.
The world lost a giant.
A big bear of a man.
With a huge smile.
With love for everyone.
With energy that could power a room.
I loved everything about Atul.
I loved how he was always happy.
I loved how excited he was about science and helping people.

Juxtaposing the clear benefits of exercise with the likely (small) risks of low-moderate alcohol consumption.
Not sure how far we can take this math but in a world where risks are everywhere and are hard to calibrate, it doesn't sound too far off.

Is Moderate Drinking Okay?
“Every drink takes five minutes off your life.” Maybe the thought scares you. Personally, I find comfort in it.

(Note, I have no financial connection to the company. I just find this idea and their technology very intriguing.)

We have a preprint coming on our collaborative science but meanwhile here is a brief piece going into a bit more detail on their technology and also some background on ambient storage of DNA.
euanashley.bsky.social
I loved the name of the tech, I loved the team (Michael Becich, James Banal) and loved that their paper (linked below) included a technical demonstration via the storage of the Jurassic Park theme song in synthetic DNA.

Mic drop.

So, in the lab, we started a collaboration with the Cache DNA team to explore the viability of their approach, called T-REX for genomic science and medicine.
euanashley.bsky.social
But for that to happen, we'd probably have to solve cold storage.

Enter Cache DNA. I was recently intrigued to discover there was a science of room temperature long term storage of nucleotides.

I often think about humanity storing our most precious data (books! audio! movies!) as synthetic DNA. Suddenly, you start to wonder if maybe we should just store DNA as...well, DNA.

And then we would sequence it with the best technology of the moment.
