This disincentives anyone bothering to repair anything. And if you do "just fix it" you run the risk of being uninsured if anything ever goes wrong.

Yeah but... Have you complied with AS-xxxx or AS-yyyy? Here in Australia we're ruled by a set of standards that we have to comply with. Each standard is only available for a fee, it costs thousands to even understand what we have to comply with.

The Seagate HDDs with the red leds used to realign themselves if you unscrewed the mounting screws. You'd lose everything on the drive. The green ones fixed that!

8088 running at 4.77mhz. the clones all had a turbo switch to run at 8mhz. They had to keep the 4.77mhz mode as some copy protection algorithms used very specific timing checks.

Agreed. Copy all the changed files into a tmp folder. Reclone and manually bring the changes back in.
