The common name "caltrop" is thought to derive from the pods' resemblance to a medieval defensive weapon called a caltrop – a four-pronged, metal object designed so that when thrown on the ground, one of the spikes will always be pointing up.

The Dvorak keyboard results in much more alternation – not a single English word is typed with only the right hand, and only a few with just the left.
January 4, 2026 at 5:47 AM
This is one reason why the less commonly used Dvorak layout can be faster than QWERTY. More than 3,000 English words use only the left hand on a QWERTY keyboard (e.g. exaggerated and greatest) and about 300 use only the right hand (e.g. million and monopoly).

The most commonly used keys were placed farther apart, increasing typing speed by alternating hands – as one hand is striking a key, the other hand can already be moving into position above the next key.

Coquí are not a single species, but a complex of 18 species in the genus Eleutherodactylus. They are native to Puerto Rico and nearby islands. They were accidentally released into Hawai'i in 1988 and people there are reportedly not thrilled.

Over his career he produced over 1,300 cartoons, but only 150 were of the eccentric Addams clan.

The dormitories were phased out in the early 2000's when the number of inmates declined. For a time they were used for DOC offices, inmate programs, and services, but eventually were retired and sold for scrap.

Although it has long been thought that oogenesis (production of new egg cells) does not occur after birth, some recent research has found that in some cases, some species (including humans) may grow new eggs even through adulthood.
