We are grateful to the University of Helsinki for hosting us at their Lammi-based research station for this productive (as well as recuperative) penultimate module.

On Friday night the Scholars enjoyed meeting several alumni of the Programme based in Helsinki and the director of the Universities Centre for European Studies.

We then heard from their senior specialist on sustainability, Heidi Melkas, on recent developments in her field. Both were very generous with their time and knowledge in a lively Q&A discussion! We are grateful to them and their colleagues Annastina and Darya for organising our visit.

CEO Charly Salonius-Pasternak outlined how NordicWest Office operates and some key differences between his work there and his former responsibilities at the Finnish Institute for International Affairs.

This introduced the Scholars to the business-oriented view on various geopolitical developments from a consultancy think tank perspective.

Throughout the Programme we take the Scholars to visit different types of institutions and organisations. During this module we were fortunate to be hosted by NordicWest Office.

They loved the lakeside sauna and evening snacks on the barbeque. There were also several volleyball marathons in the evenings! We had fun chatting about anything and everything over excellent food and by the fireside.

After an intense day of work the Scholars were able to wind down and enjoy being out in the countryside. Many went running through the forest or swimming or boating on the lake.

Part way through the week they presented their elevator pitches to some of our alumni, who joined us online, and gave the Scholars food for thought with their comments and questions.

They have worked on these for the past year in teams of 7 or 8. Each group has Scholars from different universities and different disciplines, so everyone brings a unique perspective and skillset to the team.

The Scholars spent 4 days at the University of Helsinki’s research base in Lammi. During the day they worked hard finalising their policy briefs and policy reports.

Just spent a wonderful week in Finland working on our final policy report for @europaeum.bsky.social on leveraging the benefits of community urban gardens to strengthen European resilience (more on that to follow!)

Closing sessions addressed human rights and digital repression — from facial recognition in China to bots in Russia’s digital sphere.

Day 3: AI, Law & Human Rights ⚖️🌍

The final day focused on regulation, bias, and justice including talks from academics on: the new AI Act and balancing innovation with regulation, discriminatory algorithms and data protection, AI’s use in migration, law enforcement, and civil litigation.

Day 2 finished with another round of standout student presentations tackled education, culture, and recruitment. All topics were presented through a critical AI lens.

Next up was an interactive ethics workshop led by, former Europaeum Scholar, Prof. Maximilian Kiener who pushed participants to grapple with the moral complexities of AI in practice.

Day 2: Ethics, Agency, and Superintelligence

Ethics took centre stage on Day 2: From human-in-the-loop systems to computational ethics and AI generation, speakers challenged students to think beyond the algorithm.

The day closed with student-led presentations on generative networks, sustainable development, and AI preference modelling, showcasing real-time innovation from the next generation of thinkers.

Day 1: Foundations & Frontiers of AI

Kicking off with a technical lens, participants we treated to talks on: AI architectures and ontologies, ethical challenges in FinTech & RegTech, GDPR compliance using LLMs, AI’s impact on job markets, and using AI in academic research.

Over three packed days (7–9 July), ~30 scholars from 11 leading European universities gathered at the @uni.lu’s Belval campus for a deep dive into artificial intelligence’s promise, risks, and future.
