Europaforum Northern Sweden is political network. The four northernmost counties in Sweden are working together to influence EU-policy. It is based on common interest and commitment from regional and local politicians and officials.
The EU's new budget, governance and transition policy will have a direct impact on northern Sweden. But how is still a topic for negotiation. Our meeting in Brussels was an opportunity to raise our concerns and perspectives with those in power within the EU. europaforum.nu?p=41332

We support the EU #Deforestation Regulation’s goal, but its current design may raise legal uncertainty and increased costs — especially for #forestry and #farming in the north. To protect both forests and fair conditions, the regulation needs revision. #EuropaforumNorraSverige #EFNS

In May 2026, we will organise the Europaforum conference. Three years after the European Commission's meeting in Kiruna, we will gather there to talk about the importance of the place for EU competitiveness. Save the dates 7-8th of May. Maybe even the 6th, since we'll arrange technical visits then.

The future is green, but must be built together. At #Europaforum, MEP @jonassjostedt.bsky.social stressed the importance of combining climate action with equity: "The technological transition isn't slowing down. But EU must invest more and combine climate benefits with good distribution policies."

Mikael Janson, North Sweden European Office, argue that recommendations in a report from @oecd-ocde.bsky.social give reasons for the national level to step up. ”Our regions are among EU's richest, but the value goes elsewhere. We are vulnerable. We are getting big investments, but who will help us?”

Arvid Halvorsen of the Norwegian Military Delegation to NATO came to #Europaforum2025 to talk about the geopolitical situation's impact on northern Sweden. ”The three areas that are most important for the local and regional level are personnel, logistics and transport, and then production capacity.”

The #TEN-T transport network will be the backbone of the #EU single market. It can make rural and remote regions more accessible, allowing residents and local businesses to benefit from it. We strongly support the EU's transport policy, particularly investments in the European Transport Corridors.

Funding from #EU research programmes has been vital to making northern Sweden an innovative part of #Europe. We now see a risk of decreased funds, when we really need widening participation. Great emphasis should also be placed on #Arctic research about the needs of people living in the #highnorth.
