Ch 1 of Voices of Thunder tells Rose Thurgood’s story. She lived in Colchester, where she and her children were poor to the point of starvation. As a C17th woman writing from this perspective, her voice in the archive is unique. Her account of her life is in manuscript @thejohnrylands.bsky.social

Who did what in early modern England?

New #OpenAccess book, 'The Experience of Work in Early Modern England' by @jwhittle.bsky.social, @markhailwood.bsky.social, @hkrobb.bsky.social & @aucointaylor.bsky.social, based on thousands of #EarlyModern court depositions 🗃️

Read it: doi.org/10.1017/9781...

This book applies the innovative work-task approach to the history of work, which captures the contribution of all workers and types of work to the early modern economy. Drawing on tens of thousands of court depositions, the authors analyse the individual tasks that made up everyday work for women and men, shedding new light on the gender division of labour, and the ways in which time, space, age and marital status shaped sixteenth and seventeenth-century working life. Combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, the book deepens our understanding of the preindustrial economy, and calls for us to rethink not only who did what, but also the implications of these findings for major debates about structural change, the nature and extent of paid work, and what has been lost as well as gained over the past three centuries of economic development. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Notice, #earlymodern #skystorians, the logo at the middle of the photo? The VOC (Dutch East India Company).

All the more reason to reckon with the legacies of these companies and how they integrate (or don't) with shifting ideas of globalisation, integration, capitalism, and national identity.

Husband finds this method amusing, but at the moment I allow myself all kinds of tricks. I might want to watch The Sting and All the president's men with him (I watched them with my dad so this is in a way paying homage to both dad and Robert Redford).

...and for 'piece of work' you can read one email responded to, one set of minor corrections to an article, or some days just general being able to breathe in and out. Today I think I want to watch either Ordinary People or Barefoot in the Park. www.esquire.com/entertainmen...

I have come up with a new working method. One piece of work done equals one classic Robert Redford film that I am allowed to watch. So far have watched The Way We Were, Three Days of the Condor, The Natural, and Out of Africa (tbh that one I had seen several times, esp. the hair washing scene).

My dad died unexpectedly on Saturday last week, on Tove Jansson’s birthday, the day of Finnish art. He left behind grieving loved ones and an enormous amount of opera and classical music records. Feeling pretty grim, dealing with all the death-admin back home in Finland with my sister and mum 💔
