I think about the first Children very often.

I enjoy the Alex Benedict series by Jack McDevitt. The WOOL omnibus by Hugh Howey (now an excellent show on Apple TV).

The Children of... trilogy (starts with Children of Time) by Adrian Tchaikovsky is truly incredible.
