An unreal week of new records featuring Earth Tongue, Private Lives, Jacques Grêle et les Fausses Fuites, Giallo, S.M.I.L.E., and much more.
punk this week: twisted teens, class act, p. noid, van goth + 14 more
Hey, it’s the weekly recommendations column Punk This Week. What an absolutely wild week for new punk and rock'n'roll records. The Twisted Teens album has finally arrived. Class Act say goodbye. P. Noid return, Van Goth debut, Earth Tongue and Ty Segall link up. There’s a lot of good stuff to dig into this time around. I wrote over 2,000 words this time, dang. If you want to read about each and every one of these new records AND support an independent music journalism endeavor, grab a paid subscription. A paid subscription costs $4/month or $40/year. In addition to the weekly column, you’ll also get bonus podcasts, ad-free episodes of the regular weekly podcast, and the full see/saw radio archive. Happy reading, happy listening. * * * **Twisted Teens:****__Blame the Clown__****[Chain Smoking/Jazz Life]** For literal months, this record has been sitting on my shelf; they’ve been selling these on tour and a rip of the cassette has been on YouTube for nearly that entire time. The New Orleans punks who happen to play country instruments have finally officially released the follow-up to the exceptional 2024 self-titled album. ”The green one” is streaming. Fuck yeah. There are so many songs on here that felt like classics as soon as they performed them live. “Is It Real?,” “Circus Clown,” “100 Bill Is Gone!,” “Wild Connection,” “Peekaboo Hand,” and “Not Real” are all exceptional, and that’s half the tracklist right there. Caspian is an unbelievable vocalist, whose rasp and charisma only adds character to the strength of his instrument. RJ’s pedal steel brings old world warmth to a record that feels contemporary as fuck, both in the way bars are phrased and in flourishes like the “find my phone” alert that pops up midway through a track. As a spoiler, this record (alongside the also excellent _EU EP_) was in the top 10 of this website’s broadsheet listing _the best punk records of 2025_. This band brims over with hits. They put on an amazing live show. It’s not often a band like this comes around. * * * **Class Act:****__iii__****[self-released]** The third act traditionally brings clarity or narrative resolution, but with their final missive as a band, Class Act have tightened themselves into an impossible knot. _iii_ isn’t a record with one clear sound, as the band have evolved to the point of uncommon time signatures and Midwest hardcore that’s folded in on itself repeatedly—a paper football made of dense bass, wild feedback, pounding drums, unhinged growls, and crunchy noise. “Make it make sense,” they demand, but they can’t make sense of a goddamn thing. Why are people joyfully splashing in the water when they can clearly see somebody’s pissing right upstream? Wait…are the band wrong and is the piss actually good? They debate with themselves, but look around and see that humanity is rendered dispensable in a post-comprehension world. Maybe this complete lack of resolution isn’t a storybook ending, but this is where the Kansas City band find themselves here at the finish line. They decided early on they would limit themselves to three records, and across their discography, their lyrics have become more solipsistic, their songwriting more circuitous. This was always a project that existed in the same basement, but soon, they’ll take their findings out on the road for the first time. They’ve been swinging wildly in the dark, every futile and chaotic attempt at understanding hitting hard as they stay in the same place. Maybe the healthy thing is to finally walk that dog. Class Act is Brady on bass, Nick on guitar, Lance on drums and vox, and Bob on drums. Say bye bye.* * * * **P. Noid:****__Downpour__****[Pocket Rocket]** Just one month after Chicago DIY pop hook weavers/rock’n’roll wunderkinds Saskia and Jack released the _Bungee Jumpers tape_, they’re back with their project P. Noid. That project’s tape __Penelope Noid__, which came out the tail end of 2024, was exceptional and widely overlooked. _Downpour_ is a nine-song collection of lo-fi pop gems that sound like dusty mixtape classics somebody’s crush slid over in 1995. “Saturday” and “Lucky” are unbelievable, this pair of sunny tracks that close the album with muffled earworms. Sometimes there’s a light dissonance to their music, like on “Makes Sense Now.” Like all of their projects, this is the perfect tape for a sidewalk stroll with your Walkman on an unseasonably warm winter day. * * * **Van Goth:****__Is It?__****[self-released]** Here’s a disclosure that Van Goth is fronted by Sydney Salk, who has _written a bunch of stuff for see/saw_ and is a bud. Her bandmate is Simon from Choncy. Their debut album is defined by dark minimalism where their voices are accompanied by a pulsing rhythm and a bassline. Every now and then, you’ll get a few strums of a guitar, a couple notes plunked out on a synthesizer, maybe a shrill melody hammered out on a glockenspiel comes along. “The Function” is an entirely dispassionate account of going to a gig in New York City—ordering a High Life has never sounded so accurately drab—soundtracked by an excellent groove. Van Goth is inscrutable by design, and as you dive in further and further, you’re moving your feet _and_ you’re in on the bit. * * * **Jacques Grêle et les Fausses Fuites:****__Too Small__****[Turbo Discos]** Jacques Grêle et les Fausses Fuites is the project of Danny Kendrick, and this record _Too Small_ is a four-track masterpiece that’s both minimal and completely unpredictable. It opens with some banjo, but let’s break down “No Lyrics Left.” While Danny is singing about being creatively dried out (an apparent lie), there’s this perfect bassline, a few guitar stabs, and the only percussion is a few perfectly placed scratches of a small shaker. “My Friend’s Name” is both acoustic and warped like a track off DRINKS’ _Hippo Lite_. It’s my favorite kind of psychedelia—less about expansiveness and more about working small in unexpected ways. Somebody commented on this record’s Tremendo Garaje post that it should win a Grammy, and honestly, if there were any justice in the world, something this bedroom immaculate would get its flowers on the world’s biggest stage. It never will, so soak it up! * * * **Earth Tongue:****__Dungeon Vision__****[In the Red]** Earth Tongue are the platonic ideal when it comes to Ty Segall collaborators. The Auckland duo are out here delivering castle-storming theatrics bolstered by a massive fuzz guitar sound one minute, and the next, they’re fingerpicking an acoustic guitar and singing gently about crows and ferns. Whether they’re doing blown-out Fuzz grooves or getting _Sleeper_ subtle, it all works because they’re living the gimmick as hard as they can. Even with Ty behind the boards, it’s wild how much this sounds like it could’ve been a lost entry from his back catalog, which is high praise. Most other bands trying for something like this would sound like cosplayers; Earth Tongue just sound committed. * * * **Ozzie Hair:****__Madhouse__****[Hot Sounds]** Melbourne’s Ozzie Hair is a member of the Prize and the Judges, which means he’s a killer guitarist. This new tape is sludgy and glammy classic rock that’s hazy, patient, and psychedelic. It reminds me of my favorite New England scumbag scuzz records, so RIYL _Jungle Rot_ , Spacin’, or early Purling Hiss. * * * **Vipers:****__Vipers__****[Swimming Faith/Feral Kid]** Vipers is a project helmed by Nick from Coke Bust, and he’s joined in the band by members of some killer Buffalo bands (Science Man, Radiation Risks, Brown Sugar, and Candy). These songs fucking rip, and apparently Nick’s screaming about moving from Brazil back to the U.S. I’d be screaming like I was losing my mind, too. * * * **Giallo:****__Tenebrarum__****[Convulse]** Exceptional riffs, absolutely feral death growl vocals, and stellar production define the heavy-as-fuck debut album from Minneapolis’ Giallo. This is a band that rules at a 31-second pummeling hardcore sprint and when they sprawl out for the more patient closer “Black Cat.” A band with multitudes with a record that will knock you over if you don’t steady yourself real quick. * * * **Private Lives:****_“Think I’m Coming Around” b/w “Television Faces”_****[Bachelor]** Montreal garage punks Private Lives just released a new 7” to follow their full-length on Feel It Records this past year. The A-side is a garage punk banger with a perfect swaggering hook and a ripping guitar solo at its center. “Television Faces” doesn’t come out the gate quite as hot, but it revs up real good. I love this band in this mode. * * * **Wasted Harvest/Flower Power:****__Split__****[Bend or Break/Factory Floor]** I’m absolutely obsessed with Flower Power, an Irish hardcore project that has released only heaters. “Yellow Oxygen,” for example, just absolutely kills. They’re a perfect foil to Wasted Harvest, a more patient UK hardcore band whose tread is steadier and slightly less volatile. Their A-side features literally one-third the number of tracks, and their closing six-minute jam takes its time. It’s hardcore that’s fried and gradual, which is a sick vibe. OK, now flip the tape and get your ass run over by Flower Power. * * * **S.M.I.L.E.:****__Shut Up and S.M.I.L.E.__****[Delayed Gratification]** Last year, the Akron hardcore band released a promo EP featuring some of the best songs that now appear on this full-length. It’s burly as shit and whips by pretty quick while they scream at you about how you need to fucking shut up. Fun as hell. * * * **Birth Rejects:****__Demo__****[Ragdoll]** The great Ragdoll Records returns with a new demo from the Indiana punk band Birth Rejects. The longest track is the opener “Mind Is War,” and that’s under two minutes long. This is sloppy and tape-muffled hardcore with some _Pee-wee’s Playhouse_ samples, so I’m all in. Their punk names are Ritchie Dagger, Miss Isle, Chicka Yeah, and Dizzy Cadava. Amazing. * * * **Bratakus:****__Hagridden__****[Venn]** This aggro two-piece Bratakus hails from Scotland and sounds like they’re ready for a massive stage. Bréagha and Onnagh Cuinn have the raw attack of two people trying to stir up as much shit as humanly possible while sounding mainstream radio-ready. Their lyrics are righteous, their screams are rough, and they hit hard. They sound like the best band that would land an opening slot for Green Day [complimentary]. * * * **Raya:****__2__****[Knuckles on Stun/Idiotape]** Madrid’s Raya have been churning out some exceptional eggy loosies over the past few years, and at last, we’ve got this new long-player. This is synth and drum machine-driven garage punk with a dystopic lean. “CIUDAD DEPRESIÓN” is the sweet spot where they pick up the pace. * * * **Public Error:****__Internet Blues__****[Knuckles on Stun]** Public Error is a sneering speed punk outfit from Tampa, and this new collection packs a minimalist budget punch. * * * **Crystal Ball:****__Demo tape__****[self-released]** Dour, hard-hitting garage punk from Shrewsbury that reminds me of a UK pairing with any band fronted by Chris Shaw. * * * **Caspa:****__I Hate Caspa__****[Dirt Cult]** San Antonio synth punks with a dark sense of humor. Tahnee’s sing-song way of speak-singing plus their sparkly synth tone and deep fuzz guitar? It’s a fantastic combination. * * * **What else:**_PURA MANA_ are back with a new single from a forthcoming record on Roachleg, who also dropped two from an absolutely feral new _CROSS_ record.**** Philadelphia thrash punks _Early Grave_ have a new three-song promo that rips. _John Wesley Coleman III_ has a new album out. You should check out this breakneck hardcore demo from San Francisco’s _P.O.S._ Check out new stuff from _Orsini_, _Slags_, _Raw Impact_, _Psychic Armour_, _Factoids_, _Strängt Förbjudet_, _Corporate Plants_, _HUVET_, _OLD_, _* Full disclosure: Class Act invited me to write a bio for the record’s Bandcamp page and I decided to publish that here rather than write a fresh blurb. This is a recommendations column, and what I wrote is essentially a two-paragraph recommendation. As payment, I asked the band to donate my fee to a Minneapolis mutual aid fund._

The Australian trio on wielding giant puppets, fearing giant jellyfish, and finding inspiration in Betty, Veronica, and H.R. Pufnstuf.
we now return to itchy & the nits
Be quiet, my show is on! Itchy & the Nits are back with a second ~~season~~ album featuring all the sun and fun of the Australian coast. A beach episode, if you will. _Greetings From.._., the new release from Total Punk and Anti Fade, finds the trio expanding their toolkit of garage goodies into longer songs and deeper grooves. But don’t go thinking the Nits have lost their mojo—this record is built from the same cloth as Thee Headcoatees, Josie and the Pussycats, and the _Girls in the Garage_ series. A recap for those who haven’t previously tuned in: The band is made up of Eva McGregor on guitar, her sister Jacinta (Cin) on bass, and drummer Bethany Little-Woodcroft. The band’s first iteration started in high school. Eva had saved up her dog walking money to buy a guitar and Beth had a drum kit at home from growing up with a musician father. Cin joined later on, and after a few years of playing around town, the band released their first EP in 2023. Now split across Sydney and Melbourne, the band still gets their kicks in by playing gigs and touring across the world. * * * **Congrats on the new album.** Eva McGregor: It’s different from our last one, so I hope people still like it. Bethany Little-Woodcroft: The songs are a little bit longer, like 30 seconds longer on average. Eva: Yeah, nearly two minutes! Cin McGregor: And we recorded the album over six different sessions over the last year and a half. Bethany: We did two songs at a time—and more like two years, probably. Because “Nudie Beach,” which came out as a single, was recorded two years ago. **That was for the Total Punk Singles Club, right?** Cin: Yeah. We had happened to have it already recorded, and then Richie asked us to put out a single. We were like: “We know just the thing.” Eva: You must have known he was gonna ask. Cin: We were manifesting. **And were you already working on the new album at that time?** Eva: We had a lot of songs written, but we weren’t recording them for an album or anything. We were just writing and collecting them. **For the first one, some of the songs came from your EP, but with this one, they were entirely new. What was your approach to writing?** Bethany: If I’m writing a song, I usually think of the lyrics first, and then Eva will think of a guitar bit. Eva: Because at the time we were living far away, me and Beth would just get together and have a jam or come to each other with a song idea, like with “TV” or “Gimme a Break.” Beth had the song, and then we’d have a jam together and figure it out. Bethany: And Eva would usually have some finished songs too. But then ‘cause I don’t play guitar or anything, if I have a song idea, I’ll be like: “Can you play ‘dah dah dah’” or whatever. Eva: But it’s good. Beth’s so good at thinking of guitar things ‘cause I only ever play chords that are on a dot for some reason. It just feels like I shouldn't go away from the dot. And then Beth will be like, maybe you could do something that’s thinking outside of the dots. **When did you know that it was time to record the album?** Eva: I think it just came together. It wasn’t like we started writing the songs, being like _the album is gonna be like this_ or anything. It just happened. We started recording because Dave [Forcier] was like, “We can just record some things and see what happens.” And then we just kept doing it. Bethany: After a few songs, “He’s like yeah, you could just do a few more songs and have an album.” Eva: We were like, “Whoa, we have enough songs for an album?” I feel like some of them are so old that I forgot about them and thought we weren’t able to use them. And I guess that’s maybe why some of them are a bit different from each other. **How did “Smelly Boys” come about, and what made you decide to release it as the first single?** Eva: “Smelly Boys” was just us messing around one day, and we were like, this is such a silly song. And then didn’t think of actually recording it. But then after a while, we were like, _I guess it’s alright_. Bethany: Yeah, we needed some new material. Cin: And then it came out as the single. Beth: A day before the single came out, we were like, “Why did we choose ‘Smelly Boys?’ Is everyone gonna think that we’re just silly?” Eva: But I guess the two singles are like two different kinds of songs that are on the album. Because otherwise, some of them are a bit more like power poppy and stuff. **The music video for the other single, “Secrets,” is awesome. Can you tell me more about it?** Eva: I made puppets, and then Beth made a set and a backdrop. Actually, Cin’s [puppet] is here. Oh my God, it’s falling apart. They turned out to be really big, though. Like the pattern was meant to be small, but then I didn’t think about them being in 3D, so they’re like huge. Bethany: Yeah, they’re as tall as me. Eva: But we just spent a few days and just filmed it ourselves. We just filmed random stuff with them. It’s good—crazy looking, but I think that’s the style anyway. Cin: Yeah, they were really heavy. We were all puppeteering our puppets, and we're like _ughhhh_. Eva: The heads are so high up that it uses such a weird muscle in your arm. Because there’s a stick that makes them play the instruments. To do that in time and then make them sing the words in time is like impossible. **It’s like a _Sesame Street_ Ernie-style puppet. ** Eva: Yeah, I actually copied the pattern from the Muppets. It’s so funny just having them now. I don’t wanna get rid of them, but they’re just like such huge things that exist in our house now. Cin: They’re your housemates. You definitely have to keep them. **Something that does tie the two albums together is that they both have a theme song. Why did you decide to write a new one?** Eva: I think for some reason, we just said that the new album should have one as well. And it’s fun to write a theme song, too. It’s easy to remember the words. Cin: That one says “welcome” in it as well. So it’s hello, everyone. And then the other ones goodbye. Eva: We usually open with the new theme song and then end with the old one. Because we used to just open with the old one and end with the old one. So now we don't have to do it twice. Cin: After the second one, everyone knows that we're done and to get the hell out... I’m just kidding. Bethany: Sometimes people are like, encore encore. But then it's awkward because we've already played the theme song. So it feels wrong to have any more songs afterwards. Cin: And then usually even during the encore, we'll play the theme song to be like, okay, that's it for real. **So you've played it three times, sometimes.** Bethany: Yeah. Like maybe on one or two occasions. Cin: Just if we need. **Would you say when you play live, you play faster?** Eva: I feel like the more nervous we are, the faster we play. Or if we're really drunk, sometimes we play really slowly. Bethany: Heaps of the recordings on the album are a lot slower than we play them live because a lot of them we recorded before we played them live, and now they've sped up so much. Eva: And then I listen to the recording, and I think it's in slow motion. You can just listen to it on double time if it’s too slow. **Do people dance at your shows?** Bethany: Maybe when we're in Melbourne. I guess people there are more into moshing. Eva: Sometimes. Our music is almost a bit too fast to dance to. Like, I don’t know how you’d work out how fast to go. In America, people were doing the thing where they, what is it? Two-stepping. And they go all the way across the stage. Cin: That was a culture shock. Eva: I thought they wanted to see which side of the amps was louder. **How was your last bit of touring in Europe?** Bethany: It was so awesome. It was crazy, though, because we don’t really play that much in Australia, so when we were there, we were playing like pretty much every day for three weeks, and we were all really tired by the end of it. Eva: It was so crazy and so much every day. But then I was so bored when I got home after that. Cin: Yeah, I got used to it. Eva: Everyone in Europe was so lovely, like the bookers and stuff, just had us stay and I couldn’t believe it. Cin: And they made us awesome dinner and breakfast, and everyone’s beds are so comfy. Eva: Yeah, we were spoiled. **What about Japan? Had you been there before?** Bethany: Me and Cin went to Japan the year before for Back from the Grave, it was so awesome. And then we hadn’t played there before, but I messaged Toyozo Toyoshima, who helps book some of the bands for it, and we asked him if we could play, and he said yeah! Eva: Yeah. I love Japan. And all the bands that we played with, like Toyozo’s band Falling Sugar. I’m so obsessed with them now. **Something that you can tell in both albums is how much you love all TV and cartoons. What were some of your favorites growing up?** Eva: I just really liked the _Looney Tunes_ when I was little. Whenever anyone like tells me a story or describes something, especially Beth ‘cause of her mannerisms, if she like explains something at work, I always imagine it as _Looney Tunes_ in my head. Cin: Me and Beth used to watch _Roger Rabbit_ a lot of times. Bethany: And definitely _SpongeBob_ and _H.R. Pufnstuf._ **I was scared of _H.R. Pufnstuf!_** Beth: A lot of people say that. Cin: I guess he is a bit of a weirdo, but we love that too. Beth has a tattoo! Bethany: One time, I emailed ABC to ask if they could play the _H.R. Pufnstuf_ movie, and they said no. Eva: Why not? Bethany: They said they couldn’t play it ‘cause they played it recently. And that was actually why I emailed, because I missed it. Eva: That’s crazy. You could have just looked it up on YouTube. **Who drew the album art?** Eva: Beth! It’s awesome. And the t-shirts. Bethany: Yeah, everything. For the last album cover, we came up with the idea for a postcard, and then we didn’t end up using it. We were gonna do it for the “Nudie Beach” single and then forgot about that. And then when we were doing the album, we were like looking at comics and stuff, and we thought that would look cool. Eva: Oh yeah, _Betty and Veronica_! It turned out awesome. **What’s up in the scenes around Sydney and Melbourne at the moment? What am I missing?** Bethany: I guess since it’s been Christmas and New Year’s and stuff, there haven’t been heaps happening at the moment. Eva: But there’s some shows coming up that will be fun. Like we’re playing with Love Banana, and I’m keen for that. Eva: We did just play in Northern New South Wales with Cupid and the Stupids and a bunch of other bands, and they were one of the best bands I’ve ever seen in my life. Cin: The singer was also tap dancing, and the drummer was going crazy with the percussion as well, which is so awesome. We were bedazzled. Eva: And I was just down the coast, but everyone’s too scared to swim because there’s sharks everywhere right now. It’s been so many. Cin: Yeah, and there are heaps of jellyfish in Melbourne right now. So everyone’s been scared, I feel like I’d be more scared of a shark, although I don’t know how big the jellyfish are. Apparently, they’re really big. And they’re red. I don’t know. I think they’re deadly Bethany: That actually sounds even scarier than sharks. Eva: Can you fight one off? Cin: I don’t know, and they have really long tentacles. Can be meters. **I tell all my friends to visit Australia, but they all go, “Oh, we’re scared, they have big animals there.” And I’m like, “It’s a city, you don’t see the animals.”** Eva: At least it’s in the water, and I’ve never seen one before. I’m more scared of things in America, like bears. Cin: I agree. Because there’s nothing you can do if you saw a bear. If you saw a jellyfish, you could just not swim in the water. But if you saw a bear, I feel like you’d just be a goner. Eva: You can’t just not be on the land anymore. **Yeah, my boss lives in the woods, and he sends me videos of the bears in his yard.** Eva: Oh my God. But I also love to see them. When we were in Yosemite, I got up really early ‘cause apparently it was bear time and I was walking around trying to see one. I was looking around, really scared, but I was also like _I have to see one while I’m here_. Itchy & the Nits, photo by David Forcier **What’s next for Itchy & the Nits? Is it time to sit back and enjoy the album, or are you getting right back to the studio?** Bethany: I guess ‘cause we wrote all these songs a while ago. Probably start writing some more stuff. Eva: I haven’t thought that far ahead, but I feel like we’ll always have jams. Just messing around and writing silly stuff. So I guess we’ll just keep doing that and see what happens. Maybe another album will just happen before our eyes. * * * _see/saw is a reader-supported publication. If you enjoyed this piece, please share and_ _subscribe to the newsletter_ _._

Bandcamp Friday heralds the return of the Nits, a new obsession from Liverpool, BUIO OMEGA covering Black Flag, Jaguar 777’s lust rock, and much more.
punk this week: w-9, itchy & the nits, ritual cross + 17 more

Hey, it’s Punk This Week, and it’s a Bandcamp Friday. That means there’s a lot of new punk and rock'n'roll records to wade through, including the new full-length from Itchy & the Nits, a level-up from Chicago’s Ritual Cross, BUIO OMEGA covering Black Flag, the debut album from Cleveland’s Jaguar 777, and more.

While there’s plenty of free stuff to read on see-saw.fun, this column is only available behind the paywall. Up front is Emma Ledgerwood, who’s also in T.A.C.K. and Tonya. This record has wiry feedback and no wave switch-ups; they excel at bubbling and gradual bass murk, and when shit hits a fever pitch, it rips. Ledgerwood’s screaming the word “mommy” repeatedly into a telephone receiver while her bandmates smash through a post-punk jog. It’s a strong debut and a phenomenal example of gig economy solidarity. A terrible month to be alive. Thanks to the punks for being an inspiration.
playlist: the 52 best punk songs of january 2026

It was a deeply rough start to 2026, and people need help everywhere. Gaza’s infrastructure has largely collapsed and Minneapolis is occupied by the secret police. It’s been a month of anger and depression, so I’ve been making myself busy in a fruitless attempt to outrun it all. Countless people have talked about the inspiring nature of Minneapolis’ resistance and protest, and it’s important to remember that the end isn’t in sight. Anything you can do to donate or help is crucial.

It’s not a surprise that punks have been at the forefront of community organization. Music scenes require communication and wrangling skills. When someone falls over in that city, the community rises to meet them. When anybody says “it’s punk time,” they’re not just talking about protest songs (though there’s so many of those, including two on the below playlist titled “Fuck ICE”). They’re talking about organizing. I’m doing some organizing of my own—I’ll say more soon—because the punks are showing the way.

I’ve got plenty of stuff to plug, including that 2025 best punk of the year zine and the forthcoming see/saw year 2 party. Soon I’ll share flyers for more additional shows in Eau Claire and Minneapolis. punk this week: en kernaghan band, life expectancy + 15 more

Hey, it’s Punk This Week, the weekly punk and rock'n'roll recommendations column. It’s out on a Saturday again out of respect for two weeks of Friday general strikes. Once again, I’d encourage you to donate to the people of Minneapolis who still live in a state of occupation by ICE. I’d also encourage you to listen to some really outstanding new records by En Kernaghan Band, Life Expectancy, Power Pants, Yuasa-Exide, Waylon Thornton, and more.

This column is only available in full to those who subscribe for $4/month, $40/year, or barter (hit me up). Punk This Week, bonus podcasts (including the new Marked Men episode of see/saw jukebox), and the full see/saw radio archive are what’s behind the paywall. There’s free stuff, too, if you want to subscribe for free.

En Kernaghan Band: Energetik [Holiday Maker]

Ethan Kernaghan is the Brisbane-based throwback garage rock great behind the En Kernaghan Band. The band’s self-titled album from over a decade ago is a criminally undersung masterpiece, and this new one follows in its footsteps for a rock’n’roll record with tambourines, earworm melodies, and vintage country-adjacent warmth that any Nuggets, Ar-Kaics, Sharp Pins, or freakbeat maniac will appreciate.

If you would like to be convinced, listen to “Don’t Be Scared” and then try not to listen to it 10 more times. It’s such an immaculately crafted melody, and then Kernaghan’s multi-tracked harmonies and layered guitar licks bring it to the highest level. This former Hare Krishna has lyrics on this album that search for guidance and answers, all while sounding like a lost decades-old masterpiece that smells like the best kind of record store. This is a wonderful record.

This post is for subscribers only

Become a member to get access to all content
Subscribe now

The Sleaze, Bermuda Squares, Kilynn Lunsford, Cruelster, BUIO OMEGA, TY, and T.A.C.K. March 28 at Eagles.
get your tickets to see/saw year 2 in minneapolis

Last year at Eagles #34 in Minneapolis, I threw a birthday party for see/saw. It was seven bands in two rooms—a power bill. I threw two parties beforehand, too—both power bills. Sometime that week, Greer from BUIO OMEGA told me “we’ll play year 2.” A few people told me they were excited about year 2. At some point it just seemed like a given that I’d do year 2. Today, tickets are on sale for year 2.

On March 28, at the Fraternal Order of Eagles #34, you are cordially invited to see/saw year 2. The Sleaze, Bermuda Squares, Kilynn Lunsford, Cruelster, BUIO OMEGA, TY, and T.A.C.K. are playing. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Bands start at 7 p.m.

Minneapolis garage punk greats the Sleaze are reuniting for what Conor calls “their first and only show in 13 years.” Their 7" run including “Smokin’ Fuckin’ Cigs” and the “Crush” b/w “PCP” 7" is quietly legendary. They put out perfect records and played unforgettable live shows. The last time I saw them was at Total Punk’s 2013 SXSW party. I watched a dude pour an entire beer down Conor’s buttcrack. My brother and I laughed and laughed.

Bermuda Squares are returning in 2026, and at year 2, Tony says they’re going to play some new stuff. I love this band’s records and am excited about the prospect of the follow-up to 2024’s Outsider. Shout out Annie and Pat and AJ, but especially Tony, who helped broker the Sleaze reunion. Here’s a pro tip from me to you: When you ask any band to reunite for your blog’s birthday party, it’s good to have Tony broker the deal. I am a huge Bermuda Squares fan and can’t wait to see them again.

BUIO OMEGA, hardcore darlings of South Minneapolis, fucking rule. Greer is a legend. Nikki is a legend. Matt is a legend. Midge is a legend. I don’t know CC yet, but she’s a legend by association in the very least. Do you want to see a band that’ll get in your face and rip through songs from their unbelievable new 7" On the Prowl and some other deeply good ones too? Don’t you want to stop by the merch table and get one of the puppy dog t-shirts or one of Greer’s sick pins or talk to Nikki about classic All Japan matches?

All four bands coming in from out of town released some of the best punk records of 2025. Philadelphia’s Kilynn Lunsford is bringing her band and gracing the Shadewald stage with songs from the unbelievable art punk opus Promiscuous Genes.

This major announcement thankfully includes the news that Cruelster will drive over from Cleveland. Make Them Wonder Why is a masterpiece and I can’t believe they agreed to this.

TY are heading over from Detroit on the heels of their tough'n'catchy debut WE R TY and their new 7" Hot Wheel City. When Rocco interviewed them for see/saw, they talked about how much they hate Nazis. It’ll be real nice to see ’em.

The New Orleans garage punk duo T.A.C.K. are coming up and smashing a trash can lid. Expect some two-ingredient ragers from their stellar debut, TACKLE.

I love Minneapolis.
