We had to make that call 3 weeks ago. Our beloved Saint Bernard was nearing 11 and deteriorating.
We loved her and enjoyed her whilst she was still enjoying life.
The day came when she couldn't stand even with assistance.
We called it.
She went to sleep very peacefully.

I would add that science is also about making a hypothesis about what would happen when you change a variable and then seeing if that is the case.

A general threat would not stop at least one person from leaking information that would not personally identify themselves as the leaker.
A one off major bribe would not deter them.
Perhaps a series of ongoing bribes that would cease if anyone was to leak it?
