I bet a good slathering of salted butter will do wonders!

Who knew so much of my self regard was tied up in yogurt competence??

I've been Instant Pot-curious for a while, and this is definitely pushing me in that direction! I really don't want to acquire any appliances this year because this is a temporary place, but the thought of having to buy yogurt the whole time we're here is surprisingly crushing!

Ooh, interesting!

Yes! Why won't my lactobacillus babies thrive for me??

I've always secretly scoffed a little bit at people using yogurt makers or instant pots to make yogurt: "do you think Bulgarian grandmothers need an instant pot??" And now I'm feeling the pain of my hubris!

But it's 3/5 of the batches I've made at my new apartment, so I don't know how to be successful here yet!

I don't want to keep throwing good milk after bad if it's just not going to work, but last night I made a couple changes to hopefully keep it warmer, but then there was a power outage at some point overnight and the light stayed off until I got up, so I didn't get a fair test.

Gotta start cranking the heat in the winter to avoid the waste of having to buy store yogurt in plastic containers 🙃

I made a couple batches successfully when we first moved here, but it was pretty warm then. It's surprising that a few degrees would make such a difference, but maybe it's the difference between the apartment being 77 degrees and 70 degrees.

I think it's a temperature issue. I make yogurt by warming up milk on the stove and then letting it culture in the oven with the oven light on. I think the oven at the new place just isn't staying warm enough with the light on.

The middle batch got dumped down the drain. It was basically just warm milk that had been sitting out for 12 hours. The first and third failed batches have a bit of fermentation going, so we'll be able to eat them for breakfast a few days and then use the rest for baking (mm, SK yogurt flatbreads!)

I haven't really compared many. I think I got the Emerson string quartet set in high school, and it was my introduction to them, so I love that version. How about you?

It really would have been a waste if you'd killed it and not eaten it!
