Today, our summer students wrapped up their 10 weeks at @jeffersonlabva

Our crew was happy to have Veltman and Colin this summer! They did great work, and I look forward to seeing where they go next!

Here's to 43!

43 years old today

21 years working in #accelerator #physics

10 years married

8 years a father (5 for two kids)

Lived in 5 countries on 3 continents

Lots of ups and downs. Lots of wins and losses. Lots of happiness and pain.

No regrets.

TW: snake, dead snake.

Today, we had an "unauthorized herpetological intrusion" in our #Accelerator tunnel.

A black racer took out 5 filament boards, dropping one of our cryomodules. It did not survive the exposure to high voltage.

For years, I've worked to design a set of Splitters for our proposed CEBAF energy upgrade, which uses FFA #accelerator concepts.

This is the 5th matching solution I've found for 6 electron beamlines of energies ~10-21 GeV. This matches the LINAC+Spreader optics into the FFA Arc.

Fun #physics factoid I recently learned:

When optichromic rods are exposed to radiation (gamma), they turn purple!

On the left, a vial with 2 low-dose + 2 high-dose rods. Top right, unexposed. Bottom right, exposed.

Used in our #accelerator #science grant studying permanent magnet degradation.

Two tech notes written on completely different #accelerator #science topics in one week.

Sometimes, #physics is really fun!

Very happy to announce that, as of March 1st, I have been promoted to Staff #Accelerator #Scientist III in the Center for Advanced Studies of Accelerators (CASA) Group at Jefferson Lab.

After ~21 years of accelerator #physics experience, this feels good.

It was quite nice today to see my efforts to improve morale and overall well-being at Jefferson Lab make it into the weekly communications email!

We may focus on #science, but science is performed by people, and we all need a pick-me-up at times!

I felt the need to post some #photography, mostly to see how the community is here on Bluesky.

Just a few I took over the years.

Saw this in my neighborhood today, and cannot think of a better analogy for The United States.

Our #government stands shoulder to shoulder with #vultures, standing on the backs of "lesser" creatures, devouring them.

Here's Hampton Roads, Virginia and the locations that rely on federal funding to operate.

These are *mainly* concentrated on areas with lower incomes.

A photo of yours truly, back in 2006 at PCaPAC!

I had been an #accelerator #physics graduate student for 2 years at this point. I had just changed focus from superconducting RF #science #research to #beam dynamics research (both at Jefferson Lab).

January 13, 2002 - The Superbowl of Hardcore at The Nation in DC. A massive lineup of #punk and hardcore bands.

I found the Agnostic Front set, and you can see me up front. Bandana, next red shirt until about 11:30 when someone jumps on my head and the bandana is gone ;).

We installed our permanent #magnet samples on tripods in the CEBAF #accelerator enclosure. These, along with those in my previous post, will be used to study how the magnets degrade in a #radiation environment.

We labeled the vials and placed them alongside OSL area #dosimeters that read gamma and #neutron radiation onto mounting boards filled with permanent magnet samples.

These were mounted on the outside of CEBAF's recirculating arcs for radiation exposure.

Today, we installed some of our #magnet degradation samples!

These are optichromic rods. They're sensitive to gamma #radiation The white ones are low dose, black are high dose. The liquid inside changes color when they are exposed. We put two of each in each vial.

The #dosimetry for our #magnet degradation study came today!

The trunk is full of optichromic rods, and the back seat is full of OSM area dosimeters.

This Hall Probe costs about $8k. The aluminum holder is about another $500.

The ceramic broke today.

Now I have to find a way to safely use it while awaiting a replacement.

Each plate in this photo contains 4 sets of 4 permanent #magnets. Each will have 36 point measurements with a Teslameter, and 12 measurements with a Helmholtz Coil/Fluxmeter. 48 measurements/plate, lots of plates left to get baseline measurements.

Spent most of the day with a crew of new #accelerator operators, assembling and organizing our permanent #magnet pair assemblies. These will be measured, and then installed in the CEBAF enclosure to see if/how they degrade from #radiation exposure.

Tomorrow, I'll be giving the Physics Dept. Colloquium at Old Dominion University.

The talk will be for a general physics audience, and discuss the current CEBAF machine, the FFA@CEBAF Energy Upgrade, and our permanent magnet degradation studies!
