Yes, most teachers don't learn how to build curriculum in their training (some probably do), and you also need coherence across grades. Teachers typically don't have time for that.

Fishtank has a free version, and the paid version is much lower cost than most curricular materials. CKLA and EL are both freely-available.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
Part of the science of reading is that students should build knowledge. SOR advocates for knowledge-rich curricula, like CKLA, Fishtank, and EL.

David Ellison says TFP is committed to "amplifying voices from all corners of the spectrum" - the spectrum that runs from reactionary centrism to center right.

(Also, um... spectra don't have corners).

Never forget how easy it is to dupe these people. You don’t have to run anything resembling a platform for ‘divergent views’ or ‘a range of opinions.’

You just have to *say* you’re doing that and run the same right-wing slop you can find at 50 other outlets.

The right is never asked to be welcoming to others, to take the perspective of others, to be accountable for their rhetoric.

This conversation felt like just another example of the left being held responsible for every random person who objected to Dave Chapelle or any other bigotry, because they didn’t show voters they “liked them.” Meanwhile, the right literally calls anyone on the left “evil” and “demonic.”

This was revealing. Worth reading. The basic demand is that Coates spend less time thinking/writing his true feelings and more time playing political strategist. Klein asks him over and over him to do Dem strategy; he says no, over and over. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/28/o...

Not all published curricula are scripted. Many have relevant engaging books, deep questions, opportunities for research, etc.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
There is research, however, that speaks to having a coherent and consistent curriculum- which doesn't happen when everyone does their own thing. It's also incredibly hard on new teachers.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
There are lots of published curricula that align to the SOR and center whole books - EL, Fishtank, Bookworms all come to mind.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
What?!? It's absolutely aligned with the SOR - research indicates building knowledge impacts comprehension, and thenstic units and novels are both great ways to build knowledge. The old style themstic units that were more about crafts aren't great, but that's not what I'm talking about.

Mark your calemdars! Coming this week, 9/26!

I had a great time talking with Melissa and Lori about interventions for upper elementary students, and I'm excited for you to hear how evidence-based practices grow readers.
A notice for an upcoming podcast episode: Reading Interventions for Upper Elementary Readers with Catlin Goodrow, on the Melissa and Lori Love Literacy podcast.

It's mainly a balanced lit hideout around here.

I know this won't matter to you, but I've never met a researcher with more integrity than @natejoseph.bsky.social . If you want to actually understand the state of the science, he's the best around. You could actually learn what the science says instead of relying on a bunch of blogs.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
Not a great list. Either CKLA or Arts and Letters are knowledge-rich, but CKLA can be pretty dry. There are better options for sure.

Truth bomb‼️

This man should be the one speaking on college campuses…

“They’re planning for us to turn on each other and make this culture war a civil war. I am begging you, please, for the love of God, for the love of our neighbors… do not take the bait.”

Look, you do you. I'll just keep on teaching kids to read using evidence-backed methods. The ones I've been using for 20+ years.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
Um... you know the term goes back to the 1800s right?
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
In addition, not sure how you can say you "can't tell the truth in the US" when I read articles all the time pushing back on reading reforms.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
Anyone who knows the actual science would tell you that just adding phonics a) isn't following the SOR, and b) wouldn't magically make scores in 8th grade improve. There's another set of pedagogical moves required when students can read the words.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
...that's just the tip of the iceberg. The evidence about the efficacy for phonics teaching goes back decades. There's also science about comprehension, fluency, etc. Anyone who tells you that "SOR is just phonics" doesn't know what they're talking about.
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
It's not my credentials, it's my experience of teaching children to read who are not disabled, not dyslexic, but come to third or fourth grade reading at a first grade level because they were not taught using evidence-backed instruction. If you've been following this movement for five years, then ..
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
Do you teach reading? Or research reading acquisition?
evidentlyreading.bsky.social
But the pop version has emerged because people over-simplified the science. You will find many advocates within the movement who come to it from a liberal, social justice orientation, and who strive to align to the actual science, rather than the pop version.
