sounds a little silly, but sometimes you just need to word vomit about work stuff! I usually write a to do list or journal in my last hour or directly after my last shift. You get it out of your system, and then you just find something you like doing that takes you completely out of that mindset.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! She was engaging very negatively with our community a few months ago and it's sad to see that she appears to not have changed. :(

Both sisters want to break from their mother's path. Especially considering the time, this is a remarkably mature and beautiful film about such controversial subjects. Probably my favorite Ozu film yet.

It's also interesting that Akiko wants to live and persevere despite her circumstances. A more heavy handed filmmaker with these same themes would make Akiko more resigned to her fate, but both sisters seem to want to change and learn from their upbringing.

In comparison, Takako seems to be taking in certain traumas in a better regard (again, reuniting with her estranged mother, Akiko's death, her failing marriage). Akiko is struggling to cope with her issues while Takako is refusing to give up on herself and her family.

Akiko is experiencing multiple forms of trauma in quick succession (reuniting with her estranged mother, getting an abortion) and it's pretty clear that Ozu wasn't trying to blame her for how her life has gone, but instead tried to paint a picture of how differently people can experience trauma.

I really appreciated Ozu's portrayal of issues such as abortion and abandonment. Ozu always takes a neutral approach to societal issues in his films, but despite this, I find that the film makes it incredibly clear that Akiko is not at fault for her circumstances.
