Veterinarian. Pain management and high quality care for all are my passions.
Urolithiasis (bladder stones) are somewhat common in tortoises and generally related to poor diet or husbandry. Treatment is surgical removal and improving the husbandry. Most can be removed from an incision in the prefemoral fossa and not cutting open the plastron. #vetmed #reptiles #tortoise

Pro-tip: “Pocket pet” is an out of date term for rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, and other animals. The proper term is small mammal or exotic mammal. Unfortunately this out of date term seems to come with out of date medicine is many cases.

Taking skull rads is absolutely vital to properly diagnosing dental (and eye) problems in rodents and lagomorphs. Teeth cannot be properly trimmed without rads and should never be trimmed with nail clippers. #vetmed

“Can we cut his nails too? We can’t do it at home. He bites us and last time he pooped all over the house. It’s just not doable.”
“We sure can.”
“$25?! For nails?! That’s insane! We could do it at home for free!”

This cat had been gagging and retching for several weeks. Everything looked completely normal on exam so we took radiographs. The thin, white line in the throat is a sewing needle. Surgery was done to remove the needle and everything went well. Goes to show how important radiographs can be. #vetmed

Screwworms are a kind of fly that lay eggs in wounds on livestock and other animals (rarely humans). Unlike most kinds of maggots these eat healthy tissue. The economic impact if these get to the USA would be huge. #vetmed #parasitology

More #ophthalmology fun today. This dog presented for a “weird” looking right eye. This is anterior lens luxation-a lens that has fallen through the pupil and is in the anterior chamber. The sliver of tapetum is called the aphakic crescent. #vetmed #veterinarian

One of the most common things people tell me is they wanted to be a vet but they "couldn't euthanize pets". I hear from and read about many vets who say it is the hardest thing they do or they actively avoid it. Many negative reviews about vets will lambast them for not providing care but instead

If female dogs are left intact they can suffer from several health problems. Pyometra, an infection in the uterus, is one of the more common. Luckily surgery is usually straightforward if done soon enough.
