No it’s fine, I’ll simply take on a $882k mortgage on a $900k three bedroom in Halifax. No way that turns out badly!

Right, the laptop jobs will go where the yuppies want to/can afford to live, and everything else follows. Same reason Texas keeps booming at the expense of California.

It’d be nice to have a politician with a modicum of vision doing that. I don’t think it’d convince everyone but I do think there’s an opportunity. I mean, I live here, I see a future for the province, but it’s not being pushed in the discourse.

You’re right about diversification, but even then there are a lot of people here not well equipped to change. I think the oil patch was really one of the last holdouts of the world where someone without much formal education could just work their way into a solid middle class life.

A tough thing to deal with is that Alberta really hasn’t reckoned with global oil consumption is peaking, meaning prices are never going back to what they were. A lot of people here think it’s the feds holding us back from a return to the glory days of 2007, and that just isn’t true.

Yeah, the tariff shit has been a problem but TBH we’re pretty used to getting bent over by the US on trade. Even the annexation stuff could probably be moved past in time. Direct interference in our sovereignty is the kind of thing the relationship never comes back from.

And Canada is now blue, Trump pulled Carney’s invitation

Yeah, true. If you’re showered and with shoes on and you’re good enough for the plane. Too many people don’t even get that far though.

You should treat others with respect. Dressing appropriately is an outward expression of that.

Duffy, and the admin as a whole, treat people with contempt, so the ask to dress with respect just scans as hypocritical bullshit coming from him even though it’s basically reasonable out of context.

I remember walking out of the theatre thinking I’d finally seen the first major piece of popular art that really fully understood what was going on

1. Hell yeah, thank you
2. I guess Alan Roden's *just* graduated, but where would he slot in?

Pitchers only really grow into their best stuff around the time they turn 37, everyone knows this.

Right, Vienna is almost exactly the same size as it was in 1910. It's grown by ~1/3 in the last 25 years, but that's just filling space that had been empty since the wars. Calgary, as an e.g., has more than tripled in the last 50 years. Just not the same set of problems at all.

The “strong men -> good times -> weak men -> hard times -> strong men” meme, but it’s liberal governments and rightist governments

I read this post and laugh, moments before stepping out my door and being mown down by a DoorDash driver barreling the wrong way down my one way street, staring at his app instead of the road.

We were standing beside a gaggle of English zoomers waiting for sunrise, while they argue over whose mum is hot (Cole’s apparently, sorry Cole). As the first red rays just start to light the top tower, one looks over and goes “it is pretty good tho” “Yeah” “yeah” “yeah it is”. Teen boy excellence

We came close in a couple of ridings here in Calgary too. It’ll come with time I think, but for now it’s not Carney’s fault that we’re not heavily represented in cabinet.
May 13, 2025 at 9:48 PM
I mean, there are two Liberal MPs from Alberta and one from Saskatchewan. I guess Manitoba could have a second one of their 7, but if the prairies want Liberal cabinet members we gotta elect some Liberals ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s not a complete solution, but “no practical magic” goes a long way to defining a line. Transubstantiation of the eucharist? Sure, if you want. “These crystals are better than chemotherapy”? No, absolutely not, get out.

Yeah, the work of writing data cleaning and analysis code is a big part of understanding your data and considering your methods. Turning more of that into a black box would be bad. Now, automating the hours I spend dicking around with ggplot2 for every single project…
