#5debutalbums8084 Tom Tom Club - Tom Tom Club (1981) Tina and Chris take a holiday from the art-intellectualism of Talking Heads and, with a cast of thousands, smash out a fantastic, fun danceable monster. Hit's galore. Soon the vacation will be over - back to the day job. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Talk Talk - It's My Life (1984) Early Talk Talk was unfairly dismissed as Duran Duran clones, but there are textures & sounds on here, especially on the non-singles, that hint at the unique sound to come. This was a serious band pandering to the times. Still good though. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 New Order - Movement (1981) A haunted, brittle record that nevertheless rises to an extraordinary challenge. Like a boxer on the ropes that delivers the knockout blow. 🎵No reason ever was given🎵 Best track - Dreams Never End #Factory #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Purple Hearts - Beat That! (1980) Strong outing from the mod revivalists. They were the best of the short lived genre without a J in their name. They also absolutely nail the Who/Small Faces guitar sound. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Red Guitars - Slow To Fade (1984) There's nothing quite as good as the early singles like Good Technology or Steeltown here, but this debut from the Sheffield band is a solid indie album with hi life guitar accents and a positive vibe. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 The Pretenders - Pretenders (1980) Arrived fully formed with this effortlessly cool, hard rocking, hook filled debut. It has aged incredibly well. The songs are full of brash yet sensual swagger. A real eye opener for this teenager. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 The Passions - Michael And Miranda (1980) Pre-hit release on Fiction Records. In the same vein as Au Pairs, Delta 5 and the early music of label mates The Cure. Tales of love, passion and fatal bike rides. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever (1982) I've played this to death over the last four decades. Hi Life guitars, melodies steeped in the misspent youth of soul and pop fascination. Dying Day is a particular favourite. I sang along with every word in the car yesterday.

#5debutalbums8084 Mick Karn - Titles (1982) Mick ropes in various Japan colleagues for this solo outing. As you'd expect, the distinctive fretless bass is front and centre. It perfectly complements Japan's output. Multi instrumentalist in full experimental mode. #MusicSky

#albumoftheday #5debutalbums8084 Blue Orchids - The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain) (1982) The Bramah/Baines half of the early Fall return with the quintessential @RoughTrade album. Lo-fi production and descant vocals. Excellent. Best track - Low Profile #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Pulp - It (1983) Listening to this sounds like aural archaeology. Jarvis's voice is there, perhaps a little less self-assured, but the music is a little awkward, and its charm never quite matches its ambition. One for completists. #MusicSky

Last #5debutalbums8084 Depeche Mode - Speak & Spell (1981) Vince Clarke's innovative synthpop sensibilities are to the fore here. S&S showed just what was possible with limited early 80s gear. This was where basic rock production was 20 years earlier. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 ABC - The Lexicon Of Love (1982) Quintessential 80's pop album. A critical and commercial hit. The early 80's were wringing wet through with intelligent pop bands like ABC. Clever and witty lyrics, orchestral flourishes, pop hooks aplenty. #MusicSky

The Jezebel Spirit could give you nightmares!

#5debutalbums8084 Icehouse - Icehouse (1981) High quality, high tempo synth pop with Can't Help Myself a particular standout cut. The upbeat poppy melodies seemed to point to a bright future. There's not a duff song here. Strong recommend. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 TV21 - A Thin Red Line (1981) Existing in a similar space to Teardrop Explodes, this great band issued some great singles and this pop/post-punk masterpiece before disappearing in a puff of smoke. Best track - Ideal Way Of Life #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts (1981) Who knew that a mixture of African influenced rhythms underpinning field recordings, evangelists and radio exorcism could produce such a timeless and innovative album. Well, clearly Eno/Byrne had an idea. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - From Her To Eternity (1984) A deranged debut solo album supported by well chosen co-conspirators. From this point, it was clear we were in the presence of someone very different. Strong contender. Best track - From Her To Eternity #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Spandau Ballet - Journeys To Glory (1981) Some years before the wedding-do classic, Gold, Spandau were producing quite interesting synth pop minor hits like Long Story and Muscle Bound. Just for a year or so they were moderately cool. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums80s84 @Madonna The First Album (1983) And so it began - nearly 40 years of following just behind the zeitgeist started with this great pop album of perky tunes. Very early 80's feel, with a still maturing voice. Best track - Holiday #jellybean #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Sex Gang Children - Song And Legend (1983) Somehow both baroque and gothic. Mixed architectural styles maybe, but an early landmark in the move from post punk to Goth. The production is a tad messy, but you can still picture Andi Sex Gang having a studio meltdown. #MusicSky
