The rational part of his mind said it would be wasteful to offer the handkerchief over to the shadows, even though the stains on it could never be properly removed. It was made of a particular silk that was the specialty of the guild artificers in Lyon, where its owner's godmother had procured it. Imbued with potential in every thread, an empty vessel crafted to amplify whatever had been put in it. And what had been put in it was blood. The silk was lilac. A temperamental color that the guild artificers had just mastered a few decades ago. Edged in a silvery lace that was the specialty of another set of artificers, one much more skilled at crafting things that glittered and gleamed than at creating vessels for magic. The height of court fashion, or so he'd been told. Genesis felt that it was a waste of time and gold to create this sort of finery, trinkets that served no real purpose. Especially when it was bound to be ruined, no matter how carefully one handled it. Genesis draped the bloodied handkerchief over the northernmost cornerstone, placed Jean-Luc's journal atop it, then set to work with his charcoal.

"I hate red. Black is easiest. Or brown." "Come on, Jasiek...think of how well it went off that one time in Salzburg…" "No red. That's final." -   -   - "I'm going to kill him next." But not if the hangover Senkov had given him killed him first. Jan should have known better than to accept a second bottle of the Black Hare's worst. Or a third. After the fifth, everything became one stomach-churning, cackling blur that ended with Jan sprawled atop a bed he didn't recognize, tangled up in a heap of discarded dresses. For an instant, Jan had thought the last two decades of playing at celibacy had caught up to him. Then he'd realized he was stuffed in a dress himself. And that the mass of red curls on his pillow were his own.

Jan couldn't help but notice that the man didn't have the nerve to hop down and help the boy. It made Jan wonder if the brother could feel the same magic at work he had. "I didn't see it..." The boy's shrieking rose to a higher, demanding pitch, as he buried his face in the white thing cradled in his arms. "Madame! You can't die!" That time the magic was so strong it sent Jan reeling backwards into the gate. It left a smell of mingled iron and cut grass in the air, along with a wiff of sulfur from the hellhound, which went skittering away from its master with a yelp. A second later, there was a frantic honking, accompanied by the flapping of wings.

Re-reading The Good Soldier Švejk...if I had the skill, I'd totally add in these style of illustrations to the First Things First stories. I got a lot of my inspiration for how to poke fun at commanders/officers from this book. Next story should be up next week!

...yes, I know I was supposed to post part 2 of "A Leader of Men" about a month ago. But...uh...yeah. I've been really going through it. More on that later. But I'm finally almost done editing! Have an excerpt from it for today's #WIPSnips word, red.

Get in, get out. That was what was important. And if a fighter didn't have enough sense left to get himself out, you had to do it for him. Or leave him behind to get killed. But it was harder moving with Stocky on his shoulders, even if he was skinny. Harder working up enough speed to swing his swords through bone, harder to avoid the outstretched hands he couldn't hack off. Over all the booming and the screaming and the crackling of more bullshit fireballs and half-dead things burning, K'aekniv heard something weird. A howl that made a shiver run down him, that made him feel like he'd just woken up from a twelve-hour sleep. Like his back was iron and like his swords were part of his flesh instead of blades in his hands. It made the going easy, even with Stocky on his shoulders. Everything was a whirlwind of fire and ice, the magic spilling out along his swords, blasting through reaching arms and hunched red-robed backs. As he ran clear of the forest, K'aekniv let himself do a little more thinking, let himself take in what was going on.

Lips purple, eyes glazed, wheezing and coughing and most of them too weak to hang on to their own gear. It was only the lightest stuff, extra uniforms and the shit cracker rations they still used for backup on Rim contracts. "Bohdan! Report!" K'aekniv yelled, helping him pull a pair of kids who were half-passed out through the transporter.  "The fog's back," Bohdan replied, without any of his usual joking or buttering up. "It took the factory two days ago. We could barely put together enough shields to get back." K'aekniv itched to throw himself through the transporter, to go to the other side and see for himself how everything was fucked. But he had to be responsible, had to think first and move second. There wasn't going to be support waiting on the other side. "All this from some fog?"  Bohdan shook his head. "Hostiles. Never got a good look at them. But Radka's people have gone through all our rifle ammunition."

Text prompt response: Street K'aekniv was right to think Errol was the talker. His mouth got the better of him not even five seconds after silence had fallen over them all, broken only by the sound of Supply Corps carts rumbling down the cross street up ahead. "You're dating Arran's ex, aren't you?" The rest of the guys shot Errol a bunch of scared looks. But K'aekniv laughed it off with a wave of his hand. "Who doesn't know about Yulenka? I'm sure even you people in the auxiliaries get busted up now and then. That's why I'm so lucky, you know. Everyone wants a healer, and he's the best." K'aekniv had known right away why none of the strong men from the Armored had taken their chances with Yule. Maybe one of them might have been able to get something going with him back before Edwin, like Arran had, but they didn't stand a chance now. Yule would have chewed them up and spit them out like he did when he found a piece of meat that was too tough in his soup.  It made K'aekniv feel a little better for the first time that morning, knowing that there were some good things about being a bastard. He'd be a bastard all day if it meant he could go find Yule at midnight.

My domovoy is finished! Not sure how I feel about the variegated thread, think I was just using it wrong. I'm getting used to linen, but I'm still an aida girlie at heart. Now to finish my other Owl Forest stitch!
