That's almost certainly part of it. Similar to why I think Microsoft made Windows search bar 1000% worse by doing Bing searches instead of how it used to function. Users hate it, but it increases web traffic to Bing, artificially boosting metrics so it's more appealing to advertisers

The longer/harder it is to get to what you want, the more opportunity for them to stick other stuff in your eyes (both content and ads). Which then leads to increased retention and revenue. Perverse profit incentive
